From the contingent of 28 Gophers who traveled to Brookings, S.D. to compete in Sunday's Warren Williamson / Daktronics Open, 18 placed in the event. No. 11 Ethan Lizak led the way for Minnesota, claiming the 125-pound title wrestling unattached, while true freshman Mitch McKee (133), No. 10 Jake Short and No. 5 Michael Kroells all finished as runners-up.

Success on the open circuit is something familiar to Lizak, who won three open titles while redshirting last season and has captured four during the past two years. After a bye and a first-period victory due to injury default, Lizak won his quarterfinal match with a second-period pin. A narrow decision (3-2) in the semis led him to a showdown with No. 7 Tim Lambert (Nebraska), a bout Lizak took 3-2 to win the title.

At 133, rookie McKee dominating in his route to the finals, with a pair of falls and a pair of tech falls along the way. In the championship match, McKee fell to No. 7 Seth Gross (South Dakota State) in his first collegiate match against a ranked wrestler.

Short looked strong at his new weight, opening up with a quick pin before a pair of decisions to set up a top-ten tilt with No. 9 Tyler Berger (Nebraska) for the championship. After coming out ahead in two narrow decisions earlier, Short came up a point shy against Berger, settling for second after a 3-2 decision.

At one of the most competitive weights in the tournament, Kroells powered to the semifinals with back-to-back falls before scoring the lone point in a 1-0 victory over No. 13 Collin Jensen (Nebraska) to advance to the event's final contest. A successful rideout by No. 6 Tanner Hall in tiebreakers gave him a 2-1 win over Kroells in the title match.

Two starters from last year's team - Skyler Petry (125) and No. 15 Nick Wanzek (174) - took third at their respective weights. Petry's six wins on the day were the most for any Minnesota wrestler, as were his four wins in wrestlebacks.

Another dozen Gophers placed in the event: Sam Brancale (fourth) and Steve Polakowski (sixth) at 133; Gannon Volk (fifth) and Ben Brancale (sixth) at 141; Fredy Stroker (fourth) at 149; Carson Brolsma (fifth) at 157; Brandon Krone (fourth) unattached at 165; Jordon Rothers (sixth) at 174; Chris Pfarr (fourth) at 184; Bobby Steveson (fourth) and Will Balow (fifth) at 197, and; Rylee Streifel (fifth) at heavyweight.

With its first tournament of the season officially in the books, the Gophers will head east next weekend for the Journeymen/Asics Collegiate Classic in Troy, N.Y. Stay tuned to GopherSports.com throughout the week for looks ahead at next weekend's competition.
