In honor of Black History Month, Gopher Athletics is celebrating those who made us great. Throughout February, GopherSports.com will share short interviews with African-American alumni from almost every Gopher program. In these interviews, former student-athletes reflect on their time at the U of M, provide advice to current Gophers and share what Black History Month means to them personally.

What is it you honestly miss most about the University?
I miss the overall structure of University life - the structure of classes, dorm life, participating in a team sport, and meeting a variety of new people everyday.
If you could give the current student-athletes any piece of advice, what would it be?
Set goals to realize your personal vision. Adjust your short- and long-range goals when necessary, but always put forth your best effort on a daily basis.
Please share your favorite university or athletic event you've attended since you graduated and what made it so special to you?
I always enjoyed Gopher Tennis events, interacting with the volunteers, and seeing Gopher Tennis alumni.
What are you grateful for?
I am grateful for being able to get a liberal arts education and to participate in my favorite sport, tennis, in outstanding Big Ten academic and athletic programs. I have acquired life-long friends from this experience. I am also grateful for my family and friends who encouraged and supported me all of my life.
What does Black History Month mean to you?
I think that Black History Month highlights the struggles and successes of African-Americans in all aspects of life. Everyday, I personally reflect on how these pioneers made many of my opportunities possible. Their contributions are definitely a factor in why I try to make the most of every opportunity.
