Gophers Open Minnesota Challenge

Minnesota swimming and diving turned in six men's personal bests and four women's personal bests on the first night of the Minnesota Challenge. Gophers won three of the five events in which they competed, two men's and one women's. Day 2 diving action will start Saturday at 9 a.m. with swimming to follow at 11 a.m.
Women's
Gophers filled the top six slots in the 500 free. Erin Emery won with a personal-best time of 4:53.40. Samantha Harding (5:00.40), Breanne Siwicki (5:00.72), Erin Buck (5:03.36), Lauren Lalumiere (5:05.14) and Theresa Bushman (5:06.69) followed. Buck and Chantal Nack (5:09.63) recorded personal bests. Emery and Siwicki also swam the 50 free.
Elisa Burgstahler had a PR of 2:14.85 in the 200 IM, finishing seventh.
Men's
Nick Plachinski's personal-record 4:33.11 won the 500-yard freestyle, with five Gophers following. Jack Tribble (4:34.88), Michael Messner (4:38.25), Nick Orf (4:38.39), Peter Lefebvre (personal record of 4:39.95) and Jan Hansen (4:43.15) rounded out the top six places.
James Tidd captured the 50 free title with a PR of 20.07. Chase Bublitz was second in 20.57 and Bryce Boston was fifth in 20.92, both personal bests.
Brenner Hohenstein was second in the 200 individual medley with a personal-best 1:56.50.
