CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. (GopherSports.com) - Aaron Bartnik's 3,000-meter steeplechase and the Gophers' 4x100 meter relay squad posted the school's fastest performances in more than a decade as the University of Minnesota men's track & field program kicked off the Virginia Challenge on Friday at Lannigan Field.
After jumping into the school's all-time top-10 list two weeks ago, the 4x100-meter relay squad of Jordan Charles, Brad Neumann, Gemechu Godi and Trevor Yedoni improved to fifth all-time in school history on Friday with a third-place showing and a time of 40.22. The mark stands as the fastest time by a Gophers relay squad since 2002. Neumann and Charles also finished 11th and 12th, respectively, in the 100-meter finals. Neumann clocked a 10.61 while Charles was right behind him at 10.62.
Like the 4x100-meter relay squad, Bartnik clocked a notable time for the Maroon & Gold, finishing fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a personal record of 8:50.37. The performance sits 10th all-time at Minnesota and is the fastest time by a Gopher in the event since 2004.
The Gophers also picked up a pair of fourth-place finishes on Friday from James Travis in the triple jump at 14.33 meters (47-00.25 ft.) and Sam Elsner in the invitational discus at 55.46 meters (181-11 ft.). Luke Johnson came in eighth in the invitational discus at 52.30 meters (171-07 ft.) while Bryan Bjerk finished eighth in the open discus competition at 48.19 meters (158-01 ft.). Mac Riedy came in 10th in the open hammer throw competition at 59.59 meters (195-06 ft.) while Viktor Stelter finished 15th at 56.07 meters (183.11 ft.).
Minnesota added a pair of top-10 finishes in the 800-meter finals with Mitch Hechsel running a 1:48.80 to finish eighth and Shane Streich finishing 12th at 1:49.69. The Gophers also had a trio in the top 15 of the 400-meter finals. Jack Wellenstein came in ninth at 47.35, Nate Roese was one spot back in 10th at 47.39 and Goaner Deng was 13th at 47.80.
Meanwhile at UW-La Crosse's Phil Esten Challenge, the Gophers were led in the 1,500 meters by Eric Colvin's eighth-place finish at 3:50.65 while Cole O'Brien (3:51.49) and Wayde Hall (3:52.07) came in 11th and 12th, respectively.
The Gophers close out the weekend on Saturday, continuing action at the Virginia Challenge while also sending a contingency of competitors to the Carlelton Relays in Northfield, Minn.
