DES MOINES, Iowa - Patty O'Brien won the 5,000-meter run to lead the Golden Gophers as the University of Minnesota women's track & field team recorded five top-three finishes and four career-best performances competing at Simpson College's Kip Janvrin Invitational and the Drake Relays Friday.
O'Brien clocked a career-best 17:13.39 to win the Kip Janvrin 5,000m, and Danielle Anderson finished third in a career-best 17:17.46 as well. Also competing at Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa, Caitlin Dillon earned a third-place showing with a career-best time of 11:23.29 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Liz Miller finished eighth in the 800-meter run in 2:17.26 as well.
Tess Wasowicz led four Gophers in the Kip Janvrin 1,500-meter run, placing third in 4:36.72. Bailey Ness used a career-best 4:39.83 to place sixth, and Emily Castanias (4:41.75) and Tamara Gorman (4:43.05) were ninth and 10th, respectively.
At the Drake Relays, the Gophers finished third in the 4x800-meter relay. Stacey Swatek, Kate Shelerud, Paige Peschel, and Ally McSherry clocked a time of 8:41.30, the seventh-best time in Minnesota history.
All eight individuals and the relay team secured top-10 finishes for Minnesota on Friday, a day after the Gophers' 4x1600-meter relay team of Kaila Urick, Haley Johnson, Taylor Mikkalson, and Madeline Strandemo won at the Drake Relays in 19:21.71.
Minnesota finishes up a busy week competing at three meets Saturday - the Drake Relays, Macalester's Janis Rider Invitational, and Kansas's Rock Chalk Classic.
