Gophers Wrap Up Four-Meet Week

MINNEAPOLIS - The Golden Gopher women's track & field team wrapped up a four-meet week competing at three meets at Kansas, Drake, and Macalester on Saturday.
Rock Chalk Classic
Minnesota took home four event titles, including both the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay titles at Kansas's Rock Chalk Classic. Kat Keller, Emma Spagnola, Kimberly Golding, and Erin Hawkins won the 4x100m in 45.71 seconds, and Hawkins, Emerald Egwim, Keller, and Titania Markland posted a time of 3:35.93 to win the 4x400m relay and move into third in Minnesota history.
Markland (400m) and Golding (100m hurdles) also took home individual titles. Markland won the 400m in 53.25 seconds, and Golding ran a wind-aided (+3.0) 13.11 seconds in the 100m hurdles. Emma Spagnola took third behind Golding in a wind-aided 13.20 seconds (+3.0); she finished third in the 400m hurdles in 1:00.38 as well.
The Gophers earned runner-up showings in three field events as Amanda Beckman finished second in long jump at 5.56m (18-03.00), Nicolle Murphy was the runner-up in the javelin (50.56m, 165-10), and Shanique Wright used a career-best jump of 12.69m (41-07.75) to finish second in triple jump.
Lyndsey Thorpe improved upon her second-place ranking in Gophers history with a throw of 61.51m (201-09) in the hammer throw, good for third place at the meet. She led four Gophers in the top 10 as Agnes Esser (59.06m, 193-09), Angie Guenther (59.03m, 193-08), and Temi Ogunrinde (52.58m, 172-06) placed fifth, sixth, and 10th, respectively.
Kiley Sabin used a career-best throw of 15.47m (50-09.25) in the shot put to place third and improve on her eighth-place ranking in Minnesota history. She also recorded a career-best throw in the discus at 48.88m (160-04).
Heta Tuuri also earned a third-place finish in the high jump, tying her outdoor career-best mark at 1.76m (5-09.25).
Drake Relays
The Gophers wrapped up action at the Drake Relays competing in three events on Saturday, collecting three career bests and two all-time top-10 marks.
Kaila Urick (4:24.39) and Haley Johnson (4:24.84) both ran career-best times in the 1,500m, finishing third and fifth, respectively, as Urick moved into 10th among all-time Gophers. Liz Berkholtz also ran, finishing ninth in 4:37.16.
Minnesota's distance medley relay team of Taylor Mikkalson, Kate Shelerud, Ally McSherry, and Madeline Strandemo finished third in 11:24.25, posting the sixth-best time in program history.
Jamie Piepenburg also posted a career-best time, finishing seventh in the 3,000m steeple chase in 10:41.80.
Janis Rider Invitational
All five Gophers in the 3,000m run posted outdoor career-best times led by Sarah Klecker in fourth place in 10:17.84. Molly Eastman (10:25.16) and Naomi Ollila (10:28.56) also earned top-eight finishes in sixth and eighth place, respectively, to lead Minnesota at Macalester's Janis Rider Invitational.
Also on the track, Kate Bishop finished fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:20.89, and Anne Haakenstad was eighth in 2:23.23. Melissa Cabak also earned a top-eight finish, tying for sixth in the 1,500m run in 5:03.60.
Five Gophers took home six titles while competing unattached: Sophia Anderson (200m, 25.83; 400m, 56.70), Erin Huls (400m hurdles, 1:01.22), Allie Funk (pole vault, 3.55m), Shay Nielsen (shot put, 13.54m), Nina Horvath (hammer throw, 51.92m).
Up next, Minnesota will compete locally at two meets next week in its final week of preparation for the 2016 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championship. The Tommie Twilight is set for May 4 followed by the Hamline Meet of the Un-Saintly on May 6-7.
