EUGENE, Ore. - Gophers Nicolle Murphy and Lyndsey Thorpe each earned First Team All-American honors to lead the University of Minnesota women's track & field team at the NCAA Championship Thursday evening. Kaila Urick and Liz Berkholtz also represented the Maroon & Gold.
Murphy picked up the second First Team All-American award of her career with a fourth-place finish in the javelin. Throwing in flight one, Murphy led the field with a throw of 53.21m (174-07) and advanced to the final in sixth place. She then used a career-best throw of 55.84m (183-02) on her first throw of the final to move into third and ended up in fourth place, the highest NCAA finish of her career. Murphy placed sixth in the event at last year's championship. She also moved into second among all-time Gophers with her throw of 55.84m, trailing only program record-holder Ruby Radocaj's mark of 57.58m (188-11) set in 2008.
Thorpe also secured First Team All-American accolades with a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw in her NCAA Championship debut. She broke her own school record with a throw of 63.30m (207-08) on her second attempt and advanced to the final in fourth overall.
On the track, Urick and Berkholtz also made their NCAA Championship debuts. Urick finished 21st in the 3,000m steeplechase in 10:38.33. Berkholtz ran 34:18.29 to place 22nd in the 10,000m run, marking her second fastest time of the season.
Action at the NCAA Championship continues through Saturday with Gophers Jess Lehman (heptathlon), Heta Tuuri (high jump), Agnes Esser (discus), and Shanique Wright (triple jump) yet to compete.
