Gophers Earn 2-1 Win at Santa Clara

Senior forward Simone Kolander scored two goals to guide Minnesota in a 2-1 victory against Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon at Stevens Stadium. The No. 10 Gophers wrapped the non-conference slate with a record of 6-2-0, with their only losses coming from top-five ranked programs.
"Sunday games are tough, and I'm very proud of how this team played," head coach Stefanie Golan said. "This was certainly a team win."
Minnesota led all aspects of the 90-minute match. The Gophers tallied 16 shots, with eight on goal, over the Broncos' seven shots. Minnesota also led corner kick opportunities.
In the fourth minute of the match, Simone Kolander found the back of the net off a penalty kick to get Minnesota on the scoreboard first.
Santa Clara's Jordan Jesolva scored in the 33rd minute to tie things up heading into halftime.
In the 70th minute, Kolander scored again off an assist from her co-captain Josee Stiever. It was the seventh goal for Kolander this season.
"Simone had a great game, and Rashida Beal and Tori Burnett on the back line kept things really hard for Santa Clara," Golan said.
Minnesota outshot Santa Clara 10-2 in the second half, and both teams were issued two yellow cards in an aggressive match.
Goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs tallied five saves in her win.
"We played this non-conference schedule for a reason," Golan said. "We closed out against Duke, Stanford and Santa Clara and it's all preperation for the Big Ten--it's going to serve us well moving forward."
Minnesota will open Big Ten Conference play next as they host the reigning national champion Penn State on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m., followed by a match against Ohio State on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1:00 p.m. Tickets are available at mygophersports.com.
