Coach Young Announces 2016-17 Schedule

On Friday, head coach Geoff Young announced the 2016-2017 schedule. The Golden Gophers will host one tournament and 11 home matches at Baseline Tennis Center this year.

"I am very excited for this coming season. There are many players who now have the experience to make some leaps in their game, which will help us tremendously." Coach Young said, "It's a tough schedule, but that will help prepare us for the conference matches in April."

Last season, Minnesota went 7-7 at Baseline. Junior Matic Spec was named First Team All-Big Ten for the second straight season and earned a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. The Gophers were named a 2016 Intercollegiate Association (ITA) All-America team, while four student-athletes were awarded an ITA Scholar-Athlete award.

This season the Gophers will compete against six teams that finished last season ranked.

Spec and Felix Corwin will kick off the fall season Oct. 1-10 in Tulsa, Okla. at the ITA All-American tournament. Last season Spec and Corwin both competed in the same tournament. The ITA Regionals that will take place Oct. 20-24 in Stillwater, Okla.

The team returns to Baseline to participate in the Gopher Invitational on Nov. 4-6 to wrap up the fall season.

The spring season begins at Baseline on Jan. 20 as the Gophers take on South Dakota State and Marquette. Two days later on Jan. 22 North Dakota travels to Minneapolis for a 1:00 pm match.

Minnesota will host Western Michigan and Wisconsin-Green Bay at Baseline on Jan. 28. The Gophers have a combined all-time record of 17-0 versus their first five opponents of the season. They then host Dartmouth Feb. 3.

The first road trip of the spring will start off in Philadelphia, Pa. on Feb. 5 as the Maroon and Gold take on Penn. They will then travel to Raleigh N.C. to compete against NC State on Feb. 11.

The Gophers will return to Baseline Feb. 17 when they play Middle Tennessee State. On Feb. 19, the Gophers will play Oregon, followed by Oklahoma State on Feb. 24.

On March 3 the Gophers will host Washington at Baseline, followed by Drake on March 5. Minnesota will head across the border to take on Wisconsin on March 11.

March 17 will see the Maroon and Gold head south to take on Miami then on March 24 a string of Big Ten Conference matches begins as the Gophers head to Lincoln, Neb. to compete against Nebraska.

Minnesota will return home on March 26 as they host Iowa - the Gophers lead the Hawkeyes 61-32 in the all-time record. Illinois will come to baseline on March 31 and Northwestern will be in the Twin Cities on April 2.

The Gophers will start a four-match road trip on April 8 as they head to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take on the Wolverines. Minnesota will then travel over to East Lansing, Mich. to compete against Michigan State on April 9. The Gophers defeated the Spartans 4-0 last season. On April 14, Ohio State will host Minnesota then the Gophers round off the road trip with a match at Penn State on April 16.

The regular season will end with two home matches at Baseline. On April 21 Purdue comes to town, followed by a match versus Indiana on April 23.

The Big Ten Conference Tournament will take place April 27-30 at West Lafayette, Ind.
