Meet Preview: Denver

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Golden Gophers are set to compete against the University of Denver on Jan. 13-14.
"Our student athletes are coming off their most concentrated and challenging block of training this year," Coach Kelly Kremer said. "We are looking forward to getting to Denver to compete this weekend."
LAST SEASON REWIND
Last season, Minnesota found a lot of success at the Denver meet. The meet was highlighted by the Gophers breaking 13 pool records at the El Pomar Natatorium. Last year senior Lauren Votava broke a record in every event she competed in, which consisted of the 100 free, 200 free, 200 free relay, 400 free relay, 800 free relay, and the 200 medley relay.
Women
Votava won the 200 freestyle (1:49.01) and 100 freestyle (49.86) to capture pool records, while also participating in the record-setting relays.
Zoe Avestruz was part of the winning 200 medley relay (1:42.09), the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.17) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:22.81). Avestruz also won two individual events: the 100 backstroke (55.63) and 50 freestyle (23.32). Danielle Nack was also part of the winning relays, and won the women's 200 butterfly in 2:02.15.
Yu Zhou led the 1-2-3 finish in 3-meter diving, scoring 343.55. Mariam Khamis took second (294.15), while last year senior Jessica Ramberg took third (279.30).
Men
Multiple pool records were broken by the Gophers at the meet. The 200 medley relay (1:29.89) and 400 free relay (2:58.11) both broke the respective pool records.
On top of that, Daryl Turner won the 100 backstroke with a record 44.37, and Conner McHugh swam a 2:00.35 in the 200 breaststroke, another El Pomar record. Matt Barnard won the men's 1-meter diving event with a pool record 372.40 points.
LAST TIME OUT
Women
In Hawai'i, Danielle Nack won both butterfly events. She finished in 54.08 during the 100 butterfly, and in 1:59.41 in the 200 butterfly. Tevyn Waddell won both titles in the backstroke races, finishing in 54.88 during the 100 backstroke and 1:59.48 in the 200 backstroke.
Multiple Gophers won single events, including Erin Emery (500 freestyle), Breanne Siwicki (1,650 free), Kierra Smith (200 breaststroke), and Lindsey Horejsi (100 breast). The Gophers also won the 400 free relay.
Yu Zhou won the 3-meter diving event with a score of 389.40.
Men
During the Hawai'i Invitational, Bowe Becker won the 500 and 100-yard freestyle, posting times of 20.05 and 44.36, respectively. Turner also won multiple races, including the 100 butterfly (47.79) and 100 backstroke (47.79).
Paul Fair (200 free), Eric Sande (100 breast), Logan Redondo (500 free), and Michael Messner (1,650 free) each won an event, as well. The men's 400 free relay won the event in 2:59.81.
At the meet, Matt Barnard continued his success in 3-meter diving, posting a 415.85, which earned him the win in the event.
NEXT TIME OUT
Minnesota heads to West Lafayette, Indiana to take on Purdue and Northwestern in a triple dual on Jan. 27-28.
