MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - All-American alum Sean Donnelly set a new University of Minnesota Fieldhouse record in the weight throw as the Gopher men's track & field program earned a total of 10 titles at the Jack Johnson Classic this weekend.
"We had a lot of nice performances today, and I'm excited about the way our team is progressing so far early in the season," Minnesota Director of Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. "Sean had a great, great performance today, and I thought we had quite a few guys step up…Nate Roese, Obsa Ali, Shane Streich, Ryan Lockard and Derek Wiebke to name a few…they are certainly trending upwards in the right direction right now."
Donnelly, who set the school hammer throw record last year and also holds the event's highest NCAA finish in school history, cleared 23.03 meters (75-06.75 ft.) to win the event as an unattached competitor for the second-straight year (Donnelly also set the meet record in 2016 at 21.90 meters). The performance breaks All-American Jon Lehman's University of Minnesota Fieldhouse record of 22.98 meters, set on Feb. 15, 2013. Mac Riedy finished second on Saturday with a toss of 19.69 meters (64-07.25 ft.).
The current crop of Gophers added plenty of victories to match Donnelly's performance.
All-American Ryan Lockard led the way in the high jump with a winning leap of 2.14 meters (7-00.25 ft.). Luca Wieland tied for second (2.10 meters, 6-10.75 ft.) while Nick Bachinski tied for fourth (2.05 meters, 6-08.75 ft.).
Meanwhile, Obsa Ali led a pack of five Gophers in the top-10 of the mile with a win at 4:07.92 while Streich finished third at 4:08.56, Connor Olson finished sixth in 4:12.08, Wayde Hall came in seventh at 4:13.16 and unattached rookie Owen Hoeft finished eighth at 4:15.89.
After winning the 400 meters at the Jack Johnson Classic last year, All-American Nate Roese led a 1-2-3-4 finish for the Maroon & Gold in the 600 meters this season. Roese paced the pack with a time of 1:17.97 while Mitch Hechsel was behind him in second at 1:18.11 followed by Josh Tracy at 1:19.78 and unattached freshman Chris Trotter at 1:20.36.
And for the second week in a row All-American Jackson Wellenstein won the 400 meters, coming across the line at 48.55. Matthew Baker came in fourth at 50.30 while Alex Kelner finished sixth in 51.57.
A week after running one of the fastest 60-meter dashes in school history, Jordan Charles added a Jack Johnson Classic title to his season accomplishments, timing out at 6.83 ahead of Brad Neumann in second (6.84). Minnesota alum Godi came in fourth (6.91) while Johnathan Webb finished fifth (6.93). Charles added a runner-up finish in the triple jump (14.54 meters, 47-08.50 ft.) while Houston (14.35 meters, 47-01.00 ft.) and James Travis (14.32 meters, 46-11.75 ft.) finished third and fourth, respectively.
While Neumann might have been the runner-up in the 60-meter dash, the All-American wouldn't be topped in the 200 meters, winning the event at 21.86. Webb was the runner-up at 22.13 while Godi came in third at 22.51.
Derek Wiebke ran a personal record 8:14.09 to win the 3,000 meters for the Gophers while unattached freshman Jack Manderscheid finished fourth at 8:42.28. Additionally, Matt Rosen led the 800-meter field with a winning time of 1:52.58 while Lucas Trapp came in eighth at 1:58.63.
The Gophers closed out the meet with a 1-2-3 finish in the 4x400 meter relay. Roese, Hechsel, Neumann and Wellenstein combined for the win at 3:18.20 followed by Tracy, Luca Wieland, Kelner and Rashawn Fountain at 3:21.15 and Streich, Hall, Rosen and Trapp at 3:24.51.
