Nov. 20, 2017
FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO ROW
1. Minnesota welcomes Wisconsin on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. game. The all-time series between the two schools is tied 59-59-8, but Wisconsin has won the last 13 meetings. Minnesota last won in 2003, when it posted a 37-34 home win. At 126 games and counting, the series ranks as the longest in the Football Bowl Subdivision of NCAA Division I. Since 1948, the teams have been playing for Paul Bunyan's Axe and had previously played for the Slab of Bacon trophy.
2. The Gophers will honor 16 seniors on Saturday as they play their final home game at TCF Bank Stadium. They are Adekunle Ayinde, Vincent Calhoun, Eric Carter, Jonathan Celestin, Merrick Jackson, Justin Juenemann, Brandon Lingen, Kobe McCrary, Duke McGhee, Cody Poock, Conor Rhoda, Steven Richardson, Ryan Santoso, Andrew Stelter, Nate Wozniak and Garrison Wright.
3. Prior to this season the Gophers did not have a player with 15 or more tackles in a game since Damien Wilson had 15 versus Northwestern in 2014. This season both Thomas Barber and Jon Celestin have done it. Celestin had 15 against Maryland while Barber had 16 versus Michigan State and 15 at Northwestern. Barber had double-digit tackles in six straight games and has done so seven times. He is the first Gopher to reach 100 tackles (has 108) in a season since safety Antonio Johnson made 102 in 2015. The last linebacker was Damien Wilson who notched 119 in 2014. The last Barber was Dom Barber, who made 100 in 2007. The last sophomore was Tyrone Carter with 143 in 1997 (school record for a sophomore).
4. There have been 11 instances this season where one Big Ten player rushed for three or more touchdowns in one game. Four of those times it has been done by a Gopher. Shannon Brooks had three rushing touchdowns at Oregon State, while Demry Croft found the end zone three times against Nebraska. Kobe McCrary has done it twice this year, against Middle Tennessee and Nebraska. McCrary is only the third Gopher ever in the modern era to have two games with at least three touchdowns in one season. Gary Russell (2005) and Marion Barber III (2003) are the others. There have been 16 instances this season where one Big Ten player has scored at least three touchdowns this season. Five (first time in school history) of those have been a Gopher. In addition to the four rushing instances above, receiver Tyler Johnson caught three touchdowns against Michigan State.
5. Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck has won five games in his first year leading the Gophers. That is the most by a first-year head coach who is new to the Minnesota program since the legendary Murray Warmath won 7 in 1954.
