Gophers Add to Medal Count on B1G Night Two

The University of Minnesota added gold and silver medals on Thursday night of the 2017 Big Ten Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at the Boilermaker Aquatics Center. After the second night of competition, Minnesota is in fourth place with 361 points.
Yu Zhou, Shelly, won the 1-meter diving Big Ten title for the third-straight year with a score of 362.65. The gold medal marked Zhou's sixth in three years. Rookie Sarah Bacon placed fourth with a career-high 344.25. Mariam Khamis also represented Minnesota in the championship final, finishing eighth with a personal record 307.90. Lexi Tenenbaum won the "B" final with a 300.100 for ninth overall.
The 400 medley relay team of Tevyn Waddell, Kierra Smith, Danielle Nack and Zoe Avestruz broke the school record with a time of 3:30.70 for silver. Waddell led off with a 51.56 backstroke split for a school record.
D. Nack led the Gophers in the 50 free with a fifth-place finish with a 22.36. Avestruz won the "B" final for ninth place with an impressive 22.17. Freshman Lindsey Horejsi finished 18th overall with a 22.69. Each of the three times were personal records.
Sophomore Chantal Nack won the "B" final in the 500-yard freestyle for ninth overall with a personal record time of 4:41.84. C. Nack dropped nine seconds in the event today, and has improved by over 20 seconds from her freshman year.
Smith topped the "C" final of the 200 IM for 17th with a 1:59.34. Sophomore Dani Bergeson placed 19th with a career-best time of 2:00.07.
The championship meet will continue tomorrow with preliminary heats of the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 3-meter diving beginning at 10:00 a.m. Central.
