SOUTH BEND, Ind. (GopherSports.com) - Minnesota's distance medley relay team recorded the third fastest time in school history and one of the fastest times in the nation this year as the Maroon & Gold competed at Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday morning.
In Minnesota's final tune-up before next weekend's Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships, the team of Shane Streich, Jackson Wellenstein, Mitch Hechsel and Derek Wiebke clocked a 9:30.48 to finish fourth overall and second in their heat at Loftus Sports Center.
Indiana won the event at 9:28.14 while the top-four finishes at the Alex Wilson Invitational now stand as the top-four times in the NCAA this year. Minnesota's 9:30.48 ranks second in the Big Ten this year behind the Hoosiers' winning time.
Saturday's performance ranks third in program history behind a 9:29.22 in 2013 (Travis Burkstrand, Cameron Boy, Harun Abda, Nick Hutton) and a 9:29.70 in 2011 (Hutton, Abda, Burkstrand, Ben Blankenship). All three times came from competition at the Alex Wilson Invitational.
"It was great to see the team run well today in a competitive field," Minnesota Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. "We're going to see the competition level rise in the next couple weeks, and I know our guys are excited to go out and show what they can do."
Saturday's performance closes out the weekend for the Gophers, who won 10 event titles on Friday at the Snowshoe Open at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.
The Gophers return to action next weekend with the 2017 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
