COLLEGE STATION, Texas (GopherSports.com) - Minnesota's distance medley relay team of Shane Streich, Jackson Wellenstein, Mitch Hechsel and Derek Wiebke capped off the indoor season by earning Second Team All-America honors on Friday night at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The Gophers finished ninth in the distance medley relay with a time of 9:41.11 at Gilliam Indoor Stadium. Ole Miss won the event with a time of 9:31.32.

The group is the seventh distance medley relay team from Minnesota to earn All-America honors and the first since 2013. All seven All-America accolades have come in the last 15 years.

The All-America honors for this year's squad caps an impressive season for the distance medley relay team. Minnesota earned its NCAA bid by running the third fastest time in program history earlier this year at the Alex Wilson Invitational (9:30.48) and later finished as the Big Ten runner-ups to earn Second Team All-Big Ten honors. Individually, Wiebke went on to win the Big Ten title and collect First Team All-Big Ten accolades in the men's mile with a personal record of 4:01.85 (Streich finished fourth in the event with his own personal record of 4:03.91) while Hechsel added a runner-up finish in the 800 meters with a personal record 1:48.23.
