The Gophers open NCAA Zone D Diving competition on Monday morning. The meet runs March 6-8 at the Mizzou Aquatic Center in Columbia.
The top five women and top four men divers from each zone in each event will advance to the NCAA Championships. Additional competitors in each event at each zone will be eligible based on the number of divers from that zone who finished in the top 16 in that event at 2016 NCAAs. Zone D will send seven women/eight men on 1-meter, seven women/nine men on 3-meter and 11 women/nine men on platform.
Last season, Minnesota sent four men and three women to the NCAA Championships. Four of each competed in 2015 under the direction of diving coach Wenbo Chen.
2016 Big Ten Diver of the Championships Yu Zhou leads the Gopher women into the Zone D meet. The 2015 NCAA Diver of the Year and 3-meter champion won gold in all three events at the 2016 Zone D Championships. Fellow senior Lexi Tenenbaum also brings two years of NCAA Championships experience. Freshman Sarah Bacon is coming off a conference meet in which she earned bronze in 3-meter.
Matt Barnard and Alan LeBlang both competed at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Barnard competed in all three events, while LeBlang qualified on the platform as a freshman. Barnard notched All-America finishes in 3-meter and platform at last season's NCAAs.
