TORRANCE, Calif. (GopherSports.com) - Senior captain Luca Wieland set a new University of Minnesota decathlon record on Thursday night, winning the event at the Mt. SAC Multi-Events and Relays with a score of 8,201 points.
A native of Saarbrucken, Germany, Wieland has now posted new records for both of Minnesota's multi-events this season - breaking his own heptathlon record to open the indoor campaign (6,089) while his decathlon score bests the previous school record of 7,862 set by Jack Szmanda in 2012.
"We've come to expect big performances from Luca in big situations, and he certainly answered the bell this week," Minnesota Director of Men's Track & Field and Cross Country Steve Plasencia said. "He's had an incredibly successful career as a national champion, an All-American and a Big Ten champion, and he has a chance to do even more to close out his college career."
