UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (GopherSports.com) - The University of Minnesota men's track & field program opened the 2017 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday at Penn State's Nittany Lion Outdoor Track.
Derek Wiebke and Shane Streich led the Maroon & Gold by qualifying for Sunday's 1,500 meter final. Wiebke finished seventh in the prelims with a time of 3:48.21 while Streich posted the 12th-best qualifying time at 3:50.46.
Additionally, the Gophers picked up a ninth-place finish in the hammer throw from Gian Ferretti at 60.31 meters (197-10 ft.) while Mac Riedy finished 12th at 56.13 meters (184-02 ft.). Connor Rousemiller finished 17th at 53.11 meters (174-03 ft.).
True freshman Luke May finished 15th in the javelin in his Big Ten debut, clearing 56.63 meters (185-09 ft.). Charlie Lawrence added a 17th-place finish in the 10,000 meters at 30:45.79 while Matt Welch was 22nd at 31:00.72.
Meanwhile, Brad Neumann ran 21.55 to finish 14th in the 200 meter qualifiers while Johnathan Webb came in 17th at 21.63. Matthew Baker finished 17th in the 400-meter hurdle qualifiers. Wayde Hall and Joey Duerr also competed in the 1,500 meter prelims, finishing 28th and 30th, respectively.
The Maroon & Gold continue the 2017 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday and Sunday at Penn State's Nittany Lion Outdoor Track.
