Ogunrinde Breaks Hammer Throw Record

AUSTIN, Texas - Temi Ogunrinde broke Minnesota's program record and Angie Guenther used a career-best mark of her own as the Gopher hammer throw duo punched their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship to kick off the NCAA West Prelim Friday.
Day one of the preliminary meet hosted by the University of Texas saw the Gophers compete in the hammer throw, pole vault, and 10,000-meter run with NCAA Championship berths on the line, along with first round heats of the 400-meter hurdles and 400-meter dash on Thursday.
Ogunrinde and Guenther secured top-12 finishes in the hammer throw to earn their way to the NCAA Championship. Ogunrinde threw a program-record mark of 64.01m (210-00), improving on the previous Gophers' record held by Lyndsey Thorpe at 63.30m (207-08), to finish eighth. Guenther also recorded a PR with a mark of 60.94m (199-11) to take 12th overall and move into fifth in Minnesota history.
Fellow Gophers Agnes Esser and Nina Horvath also represented the Maroon & Gold in the hammer throw. Esser narrowly missed an NCAA Championship berth with a 14th-place finish and a throw of 60.67m (199-00) while Horvath threw 53.97m (177-00) to finish 44th.
Cami Gilson returned to the NCAA West Prelim in the pole vault after last advancing to the NCAA prelims as a sophomore in 2014. She wrapped up her Gophers' career by clearing 3.80m (12-05.50) to tie for 39th place after tying for third at the Big Ten Championship.
Making her NCAA West Prelim debut, Bailey Ness placed 14th in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 35:16.38, narrowly missing the top-12 finish required to move on to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Championship.
The first round of the 400m hurdles saw Emma Spagnola (59.42) and Rachel Schow (1:00.35) move on to the quarterfinal round set for 7 p.m. CT Friday. Spagnola advanced automatically, taking second in her heat, while Schow advanced with one of the next six fastest times. Erin Huls (1:00.77) and Lindsey Smits (1:00.99) finished 29th and 30th in a field of 45 competitors as well.
Likewise, Emerald Egwim secured her place in the 400m dash quarterfinal on Friday at 5:30 p.m. CT. Egwim clocked the second-fastest time in her first-round heat at 52.88 seconds, good for eighth place overall in the first round.
NCAA West Prelim competition continues on Friday and Saturday at the Longhorns' Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin, Texas, where the top 12 individual competitors and top 12 relay teams advance to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held June 7-10 in Eugene, Ore.
Minnesota is set to compete in the discus, high jump, 100m hurdles first round, 400m hurdles, 400m dash, and 3,000m steeplechase on Friday with the 100m hurdles quarterfinal, shot put, and triple jump scheduled for Saturday.
