Three Gophers Advance to NCAA Quarterfinals

AUSTIN, Texas (GopherSports.com) - Three members of the University of Minnesota men's track & field program advanced out of preliminary action on Thursday at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field First Round as the Maroon & Gold kicked off the three-day meet at Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Gophers pushed both of their 800 meter competitors through on Thursday evening as Mitch Hechsel and Nate Roese advanced to Friday's quarterfinal race at 6:45 p.m. CT with a trip to next month's national championships on the line. Hechsel clocked a 1:50.16 to finish seventh overall in the first round and second in his heat. Roese wasn't far behind with a time of 1:50.52, coming in 10th overall and third in his heat.
Minnesota also advanced Derek Wiebke in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:51.84 - good for 11th overall in the prelims and fourth in his heat. The 1,500 meter quarterfinals are set for Saturday at 6:45 p.m. CT. Shane Streich closed out his season with a time of 3:57.26 in the race, coming in 28th.
The Gophers continue the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field First Round on Friday with Glen Harold competing in the pole vault (12 p.m. CT), Jon Tollefson running in the 110-meter hurdles first round (5 p.m. CT), Hechsel and Roese in the 800 meter quarterfinal (6:45 p.m. CT) and Obsa Ali in the 3,000 meter steeplechase quarterfinal (9 p.m. CT)
