AUSTIN, Texas (GopherSports.com) - The University of Minnesota men's track & field program snapped a 17-year old school record in the 4x100 meter relay on Saturday evening at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field First Round, held at Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium.
The Minnesota 4x100 meter relay squad of Jordan Charles, Brad Neumann, Jordan Webb and Luca Wieland clocked a 39.80 to finish 16th in the event while the mark just edged the previous University of Minnesota record from 2000 when Matt Taylor, Steve Burkholder, Adam Freed and Fred Rodgers ran a 39.95.
Meanwhile, the 4x400 meter relay team of Webb, Jackson Wellenstein, Nate Roese and Mitch Hechsel ran a season-best time of 3:07.17 to finish 14th.
Individually, Derek Wiebke clocked a 4:00.95 to finish 19th in the 1,500 meters while Jon Tollefson finished 22nd in the 110-meter hurdles at 14.34 and Charles finished 45th in the triple jump at 14.60 meters (47-10.75 ft.).
Minnesota carried two competitors in the high jump with Wieland tying for 19th in the high jump, and Ryan Lockard tying for 29th. Wieland cleared 2.10 meters (6-10.75 ft.) while Lockard hit 2.05 meters (6-08.75 ft.).
The Maroon & Gold will now send four competitors to the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, June 7-10, in Eugene, Ore. Wieland previously qualified to compete in the decathlon while three more Gophers punched their tickets this weekend. Hechsel and Roese qualified in the 800 meters, and Obsa Ali will represent the Gophers in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
