Gophers Grab 14 Titles at Bear Cat Twilight

SAINT PAUL, Minn. (GopherSports.com) - The University of Minnesota men's track & field program claimed 14 titles on Wednesday evening at the Bear Cat Twilight - the program's final tune-up before next week's Big Ten championship meet at Penn State.
Among the Gophers titles at SeaFoam Stadium were a trio of personal records from Jonathan Webb in the 100 meters (10.54), Nate Roese in the 800 meters (1:49.63) and Joey Duerr in the 1,500 meters (3:50.76). In the 100 meters, Webb was followed by Quinton Coleman in second (10.77) and unattached freshman Mason Roomes in fifth (11.29) while unattached freshman Chris Trotter was the runner-up in the 800 meters (1:51.02) and Matt Rosen finished fourth (1:55.31). In the 1,500 meters, Duerr was followed through the finish line by Sam Carlson (3:53.45) while Eric Colvin was fourth (4:01.34).
Two other Gophers just missed personal records in their wins as Jon Tollefson claimed the 110-meter hurdle title (14.21) and Brad Neumann won the 200 meters (21.35).
Minnesota also picked up a season-best showings from Jackson Wellenstein to win the 400 meters (47.88) and the 4x100 meter relay team of Jordan Charles, Neumann, Webb and Luca Wieland (40.23). Charles added a title in the triple jump (14.94 meters, 49-00.25 ft.) while James Travis finished second (14.62 meters, 47-11.75 ft.).
Obsa Ali picked up the win in his first career 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:05.00) while unattached freshmen Alec Basten, Jack Manderscheid, Alex Plasencia and Hunter Staack followed him in for a 1-5 finish for the Maroon & Gold.
Jonathan Tharaldsen won the shot put (15.96 meters, 52-04.50 ft.) followed by unattached rookie Kieran McKeag in third (14.90 meters, 48-10.75 ft.) and Wieland in sixth. Tharaldsen added a second-place finish in the discus while Wieland finished fifth and John Marita came in eighth in the event.
In addition, four unattached freshmen picked up titles at SeaFoam Stadium on Wednesday evening. Jon Nerdal won the hammer throw (60.83 meters, 199-07 ft.) followed by Connor Rousemiller in second (54.77 meters, 179-08 ft.) and McKeag in fourth (52.96 meters, 173-09 ft.). Clayton Johnson claimed the 400-meter hurdles title (54.40) while Matthew Baker was second (55.30). Hamza Ali led the field in the 5,000 meters followed by Owen Hoeft, Nick Rink and Charlie Lawrence. Ben Gucinski added a win in the high jump (2.00 meters, 6-06.75 ft.) with Jacob Buller coming in third.
Meanwhile, John Uchytil came in third in the pole vault, Roomes finished fourth in the long jump and Andrew Ajaluwa was seventh in the long jump.
