MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - The University of Minnesota men's track & field program has been honored as a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team for its work in the classroom during the 2017 campaign while five Gophers picked up individual USTFCCCA All-Academic honors.
The USTFCCCA announced the honors this week with 142 NCAA Division I men's programs earning the team honor and 516 individuals earning recognition. Jordan Charles, Ryan Lockard, Shane Streich, Derek Wiebke and Luca Wieland represented Minnesota on the individual honor roll.
Minnesota carried a 3.16 team grade point average in 2017.
To qualify for USTFCCCA All-Academic honors, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative GPA of 3.25 and have met at least one of the following athletic standards. For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
In addition to the USTFCCCA accolades, Minnesota boasted a pair of Academic All-Americans during the 2017 campaign with Wieland picking up his third career accolade and Wiebke earning his first career honor. Lockard joined the duo as an Academic All-District honoree while the Maroon & Gold featured 21 student-athletes who were named Academic All-Big Ten selections.
