Day two of tournament play began a successful one for Gopher Men's Tennis as the 42nd Annual Milwaukee Tennis Classic's 32-player tournament began with Minnesota victories in 3-of-4 first round matches, with Felix Corwin and Stefan Milicevic advancing to Saturday's quarterfinals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Senior Felix Corwin, hailing from just outside of Milwaukee in Elm Grove, Wisconsin, used his hometown advantage as he picked up a dominating 6-3, 6-0 victory over Pablo Landa of Illinois in the first round. He continued the momentum with a second-round victory over Oscar Mesquida of Arkansas, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Milicevic, a sophomore, won 6-2, 6-3 over Matias Gonzalez from Arkansas in the opening round and then defeated Javier Maestre of Old Dominion 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 in the sweet sixteen to earn his bid to the round of eight.
After spending the spring training with the Maroon & Gold, freshman Jackson Allen made his official debut and picked up a victory over a Big Ten rival, defeating Micah Klousia of Nebraska in his first round match. Allen stumbled in his second round match, falling 6-2, 6-4 against Joshua Howard-Tripp of Arkansas. Josip Krstanovic suffered a first-round defeat from Old Dominion's Michael Weindl, falling 6-2, 6-4.
In doubles action, Corwin and Allen knocked off Luke Smrek and Greg Anderson of Marquette 8-4 to advance to Saturday's semifinals.
Across the country, Matic Spec competed at day two of the Oracle ITA Masters in Malibu, California. In the first round of the consolation bracket, Spec defeated Michael Nguyen of Army but not before a third set, winning 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-4. Rounds two and three of the consolation bracket will take place Saturday in Malibu.
