Gophers Cruise to 6-1 Win Over Sacramento State

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Minnesota defeated Sacramento State 6-1 Saturday, the first of a doubleheader. The Gophers were led by a marvelous comeback performance from Camila Vargas Gomez. After winning the first set 6-0, Vargas Gomez trailed 5-0 in the second set before coming back to win the set 7-6 (7) and take the No. 5 singles point.
"I lost five deuce points, so I think that was definitely the key," Vargas Gomez said." Now that I just won this match, I know what i have to work on next time. I would rather win 6-0 than 7-6."
Doubles
The pairing of Caroline Ryba and Tina Kreinis defeated their opponents 6-1, while Cammy Frei and Camila Vargas Gomez won a clean 6-0. Caitlyn Merzbacher and Mehvish Safdar were ahead 5-1 at the conclusion of the other two matches.
Singles
Frei made quick work of her opponent in the No. 6 singles spot, winning 6-4, 6-2, followed by Merzbacher winning 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 4 singles spot just seconds later. While Ryba fell in the No. 1 singles spot 6-2, 6-2, Barbara Mancera took the No. 3 singles spot with a clean 6-3, 6-3 win. Kreinis won the No. 2 singles spot 6-3, 7-5.
