Gophers Open Season with Trip to Madison

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota swimming and diving teams will travel to Big Ten rival Wisconsin to begin their 2018-19 campaign Friday, Oct. 12.
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams have had recent success against their border rivals with each team holding 6-2 records over the last eight years against the Badgers. Both squads picked up wins over Wisconsin during last year's quad dual in Minneapolis that also included Iowa and Michigan.
Men's Preview
The Gophers have won the last two consecutive meetings against the Badgers, both of which took place in Minneapolis. Minnesota's last trip to Madison resulted in a narrow defeat to their rivals by a score of 159-141. The men finished their conference season a year ago with a 4-2 Big Ten record and a fifth place finish at the Big Ten meet. The Maroon & Gold concluded their NCAA Championships with a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, their highest finish since 2011.
The Gophers return 26 members of their 2017-18 team to the pool this season, including five All-Americans, and were recently rated 18th in the CSCAA Top-25 preseason rankings. They are the joined in the ranking by fellow Big Ten competitors Indiana (3rd), Michigan (6th), Ohio State (16th) and Purdue (20th) while Iowa and Penn State are currently receiving votes in the poll.
Women's Preview
After the release of the CSCAA preseason poll, the Gopher women will enter Friday's dual as the 13th rated team in the nation. The Gophers are the third-highest Big Ten team in the rankings, trailing only Michigan (3rd) and Indiana (6th). The Gophers finished fourth in the conference in 2018, scoring 1,049 points at the Big Ten meet, garnering nine top-three finishes and setting six school records in the process.
The Gophers will welcome a wealth of experience back this season in the form of six returning All-Americans including NCAA 1-meter diving Champion Sarah Bacon. In addition to the strength of their returning core, Minnesota have gained depth in their transfers and incoming freshmen class.

The Badgers opened their season a week ago with a men's and women's sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay under new head coach Yuri Suguiyama. The men defeated the Phoenix by a score of 182-107, placing first in every event. Wisconsin finished sixth in the Big Ten a year ago, one spot behind Minnesota.
Wisconsin's women similarly won their opening weekend matchup against Green Bay. The women won their dual by a score of 190-98 and were recently rated the 20th team in the nation by the CSCAA. The Badgers return Beata Nelson to the pool this season. Nelson the NCAA 100 back runner-up was the events Big Ten champion a season ago.

The Maroon & Gold will host Florida State University at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center on Saturday, October 20 at 10 a.m. Gopher seniors will be recognized for their academic and athletic accomplishments prior to the meet.
