Basten Leads Gophers at Pre-National Meet

MADISON, WIS. – Alec Basten led the University of Minnesota men's cross country program for the third race in a row on Saturday as the Gophers finished 18th at the NCAA Pre-Nationals, held at Wisconsin's Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course as precursor to next month's national championships.
Minnesota totaled 463 points in the 34-team men's white eight-kilometer competition.
Basten paced the Maroon & Gold in 33rd place on Saturday while his time of 24:20.4 was just shy of his personal eight-kilometer record (set earlier this year in Nebraska). Team captain Evan Ferlic added a 74th-place finish at 24:52.9 while Jack Manderscheid finished 79th at 24:55.6, improving his personal eight-kilometer record for the second race in a row. Basten, Ferlic and Manderscheid have now factored into Minnesota's scoring in all three of their races this season.
The Gophers scoring group was rounded out by Seth Eliason in 136th with a time of 25:23.3 while Owen Hoeft hit a new personal eight-kilometer record of 25:26.7 to place 141st. Nick Rink and Connor Olson were also in action for the Gophers with Rink finishing 151st at 25:35.9 and Olson coming in 163rd at 25:49.5.
The Gophers also ran a trio of competitors in the men's gray eight-kilometer competition with Robert Wagner finishing 28th at 25:42.4 for a new personal eight-kilometer record, Shane Streich clocking a 25:48.8 to place 30th and Alex Plasencia finishing 64th at 26:35.8.
Additionally, Patrick Roos finished 66th in UW-La Crosse's Jim Drews Invitational, held at the Ettrick Golf Club in Ettrick, Wis. Roos clocked a 27:06.7 for the eight-kilometer race.
The Gophers return to action on Sunday, Oct. 28 at the 2018 Big Ten Cross Country Championships in Lincoln, Neb.
