Big Ten Championships Ahead for Gophers

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota men's cross country program heads into the championship schedule this weekend with the 2018 Big Ten Cross Country Championships, hosted by Nebraska at Mahoney Golf Course in Lincoln on Sunday, Oct. 28. 

The men's eight-kilometer race is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. CT with the women's six-kilometer competition slated for 10:45 a.m.

Fans will be able to stream the 2018 Big Ten Cross Country Championships on BTN Plus while both races will air on the Big Ten Network on a tape-delayed basis on Monday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. CT. 

'U' Looks To Continue Success at Big Tens 
The University of Minnesota men's cross country program will attempt to claim an All-Big Ten runner for the fifth-straight year in 2018 with eight total all-conference accolades being accumulated by the Maroon & Gold over the last four years. The Gophers finished sixth at the 2017 Big Ten Cross Country Championships and return six of the team's top seven finishers from last year's race.

Khalid Hussein Claims TC5K Crown
The University of Minnesota men's cross country program was off over the weekend although the Maroon & Gold had a dominating presence at the 2018 Twin Cities 5K on Saturday, Oct. 6 with the top-five finishers including race champion Khalid Hussein. Hussein clocked a 15:12 on Saturday to lead the field in the five-kilometer race, edging Gophers teammates Jordan MacIntosh in second at 15:13 and Declan Dahlbergin third at 15:14. Dawson LaRance finished fourth at 15:23 while Hunter Staack came in fifth at 15:29. All five runners competed unattached in the race. 

Ferlic to Captain Gophers XC Squad
Redshirt junior Evan Ferlic will serve as team captain for the Minnesota men's cross country program this year. The Roseville, Minn., native posted personal records in three of his five races last season with the Maroon & Gold and factored into the team's score four times. He opened the year with a an eight-kilometer personal record of 25:08.0 at the IU Open and later improved that mark to 24:34.5 at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational. Ferlic closed out the year by running a 10-kilometer personal record of 29:59.61 at the NCAA Midwest Regional – a mark that ranks 11th all-time at the University of Minnesota. 

Gophers Add Four to 2018 Cross Country Team
Minnesota will have four new faces on the roster this season as the Gophers have added true freshmen Declan Dahlberg (North Oaks, Minn. / Mounds Park Academy) and Khalid Hussein (Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) along with redshirt freshman transfer Seth Eliason (Minnetonka, Minn. / Hopkins / Georgetown). Additionally, Dawson LaRance will join Minnesota's cross country squad as a redshirt freshman this season after competing for the Gophers track & field program as a true freshman last season.

The month of November opens with the Fall Finale for the Gophers on Friday, Nov. 2 in Collegeville, Minn. The Maroon & Gold have claimed 11-straight individual titles at St. John's eight-kilometer meet with Hunter Lucas winning the race last season. One week later on Friday, Nov. 9, Minnesota will compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Peoria, Ill.
