Gophers battle Huskers on BTN and KFAN 100.3
FIVE THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
1. Minnesota is on the road again this week (only time all season that the Gophers play consecutive road games) when it travels to Nebraska for a game with the Cornhuskers. Minnesota leads the all-time series 32-24-2 and won last year's meeting 54-21 in Minneapolis. The Gophers lost 16 straight games to Nebraska from 1963 to 2012, but have now won three of the last five games against Nebraska. Minnesota's 54 points last year against the Huskers were the most points for the Gophers in a Big Ten game since beating Indiana 63-26 in 2006. The 54 points are still the most that Minnesota has scored against a Big Ten foe at TCF Bank Stadium, breaking the previous mark of 51 against Iowa in 2014. The 54 points are also tied for the second-most points that Minnesota has ever scored against Nebraska. The Gophers beat Nebraska 54-0 in 1943 and topped the Huskers 61-7 in 1945.
2. Minnesota has had three running backs rush for more than 100 yards in a game this year in Mohamed Ibrahim (101 vs. New Mexico State and 157 at Ohio State), Rodney Smith (153 vs. New Mexico State) and Bryce Williams (141 vs. Miami). It's the third straight year that Minnesota has had three running backs rush for more than 100 yards, but it is the first year since 2005 that the team has had three different running backs total 140 yards or more in a game. In 2005, Laurence Maroney ran for 140 yards or more four times. He was joined by Gary Russell who did it twice and Amir Pinnix who did so once. Minnesota has a chance to have four running backs eclipse the 100-yard mark in a game this season. That is something that has never been done dating back to 1942. Four different players have rushed for 100 yards in a season before, but one was always the quarterback.
3. Redshirt freshman Mohamed Ibrahim has carried the load for Minnesota this year. He started his career with 101 yards on nine carries against New Mexico State to become the first Gopher to rush for 100 yards or more in his collegiate debut since Thomas Hamner piled up 158 yards in a 30-3 win against NE Louisiana (now ULM) in 1996. Ibrahim missed the Fresno State and Miami games with an injury, but then rushed 26 times for 95 yards at Maryland. He rushed for a career high 157 yards on 23 carries and scored two touchdowns at Ohio State. His 157 yards were the most by a freshman running back against Ohio State since Penn State's Saquan Barkley rushed for 194 yards in 2015 against the Buckeyes.
4. Tyler Johnson has seven career 100-yard games, which ranks fifth in school history. He has four 100-yard games this year, which is tied for fifth all-time. The last Gopher to have five 100-yard games in a season was Aaron Hosack (2003) and the last to have six (school record) was Ryan Thelwell (1996). Johnson enters the Nebraska game with back-to-back 100-yard games (107 vs. Iowa and 119 at Ohio State). The last Gopher to have three straight 100-yard receiving games in the Big Ten was Ron Johnson, who did it against Penn State (114), Ohio State (163) and Indiana (177) in 2000.
5. Carter Coughlin has seven sacks (No. 5 in the NCAA and tied for first in the Big Ten) this season after recording a team leading 6.5 last year. Coughlin's speed has caused fits for offensive lineman since he transitioned from linebacker to a rush end role last season. He has been on an absolute tear with 11 sacks in his last 12 games. He had two sacks and a forced fumble at Ohio State. Carter Coughlin needs just a half sack to tie for ninth all-time in school history for sacks in a season. He is on his way to a double-digit sack season, which has been done only six times at Minnesota and not since 2008 when Willie VanDeSteeg had 10.5 sacks. Coughlin's 15.5 career sacks tie him for sixth all-time in Minnesota history with Theiren Cockran (2012-15) and D.L. Wilhite (2009-12). He needs just half a sack to tie for fifth all-time with Darrell Reid (2001-04). Carter Coughlin also has 9.5 tackles for loss after recording a team leading 11.5 last season. His 9.5 tackles for loss have resulted in a loss of 44 yards for opposing teams. He has 25 career tackles for loss which is closing on the top-10 all-time in Gophers history.
