MINNEAPOLIS – The Minnesota men's golf team posted its second top-five finish of the season as it tied for fifth at the Marquette Intercollegiate behind a strong final round Tuesday.

Thanks to two players going under par, the Golden Gophers shot a three-under 285 at Erin Hills Golf Course in Erin, Wis., to finish 21 strokes over par for the tournament with an 885, tying with UC Davis. The finish matches Minnesota's tie for fifth at the season-opening Gopher Invitational for the team's best result of the fall season.

Northwestern took home the team and individual crowns as the Wildcats were six-under with an 858 three-round total, and Ryan Lumsden was eight-under with a 208 to top the individuals.

Competing as an individual, Peter Jones earned his fourth career top-10 finish as he ended in a six-way tie for 10th place with a one-over, 217. Jones, who was even through the first two rounds after back-to-back scores of 72, struggled on the front nine with a four-over 40 Tuesday. He regrouped on the back nine, however, and carded three birdies to finish with a one-over 73.

Sophomore Angus Flanagan found himself four-over through 13 holes, but finished his round strong with three birdies in his final five holes to close out the day with a one-over 73. For the tournament, he tied for 21st with a four-over 220.

One of those players to tie for 21st along with Flanagan was Thomas Longbella. The junior was one-under for the day with a 71. After bogeys on the second and fourth holes, he posted back-to-back birdies on six and seven before another bogey at No. 9 left him at one-over at the turn. A subsequent bogey to start the back nine dropped him to two-over, but he rallied for three straight birdies between holes 13-15 to finish his day in the red.

Junior Noah Rasinski had his lowest round of the season with a four-under 68 en route to a season's best finish of 30th. He came out strong with birdies on the first two holes, fell back to even through the seventh hole, but ended the front nine under-par with a birdie on No. 8. His back nine was even more impressive with birdies on Nos. 10, 16 and 17 to end with a six-over, 222.

Sophomore Evan Long was three-over on the front nine and even on the back, thanks to one birdie on No. 14, to finish his tournament with a 75. He tied for 45th with a 226, 10 strokes over par.

Like Long, freshman Lincoln Johnson also finished with a 226 for the tournament. Johnson dug himself a hole Tuesday but showed remarkable resiliency to get back to a one-over 73. He was four shots over par after the first hole and held that score until a brilliant stretch of four straight birdies between holes 12-15 got him back to even. A bogey on No. 17, however, cost him one stroke late in his round.

In addition to Jones, the Gophers also had two other individuals competing in redshirt sophomore Gus Minkin and freshman Harry Plowman-Ollington.

Minkins posted two birdies in his round, but ended with a five-over 77 to come in tied for 50th at 11-over par with a 227. Plowman-Ollington was nine-over on the front nine, but used an eagle on No. 14 and birdies on 15 and 16 to post an even-par 36 on the back to card an 81. His three-round total of 241 put him tied for 67th place at +25.

Minnesota concludes its three-week stretch of tournaments next Monday and Tuesday at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate in Vestavia Hills, Ala.
