Wente Scores Twice as No. 3 Gophers Pass First Road Test

10/5/2018 9:44:00 PM | Women's Hockey

DULUTH, Minn. – The No. 3-ranked Gopher Women's Hockey team rolled in its first road test, claiming a 5-2 WCHA victory over Minnesota Duluth in the teams' conference opener at AMSOIL Arena on Friday night.

The Bulldogs scored first, but No. 3 Minnesota (3-0-0, 1-0-0 WCHA) quickly had the answer and a 2-1 lead with just 5:12 away in the first. After Gabbie Hughes scored for No. 4 UMD (2-1-0, 0-1-0 WCHA) at 1:07 of the first, Grace Zumwinkle tied things up less than three minutes later with her third of the season, assisted by Nicole Schammel and Emily Brown at 3:54.

Catie Skaja gave the Gophers a lead at 5:12 of the first, assisted by Emily Oden and Kippin Keller. Taylor Wente would extend the lead for Minnesota with a power play score at 7:19 of the opening frame and then tacked on an even-strength goal at 14:13. Zumwinkle tallied a helper on each of Wente's scores, while Schammel and Alex Woken each also added a point.

"Our main focus was getting pucks to the net, getting rebounds, screening [UMD netminder Maddie Rooney]," said Wente. "We wanted to get the first goal. We just responded right away, and that's what I love about our team."

UMD would pull within two as Taylor Anderson scored for the Bulldogs at 16:29 of the first before the teams took the 4-2 score to the locker room. The second period would be much quieter on the scoreboard as the defenses held. The Gophers killed a late penalty to maintain their two-goal lead and led 32-18 in shots with 40 minutes past.

Woken lit the lamp herself at 8:42 of the third, extending Minnesota's lead to 5-2 as she knocked in a rebound off a Patti Marshall shot. Sophie Skarzynski also added an assist on the play. Alex Gulstene and the Minnesota defense did the rest, quieting the Bulldogs for the final two frames. Gulstene made 21 stops for the Gophers, while Minnesota peppered Duluth's Rooney with 46 shots in the game.

"Gulstene showed such great mental toughness," said Schammel. "It's always tough having the first shot go in, and it was great to see her bounce back. We have such great depth in net this year, and she was able to stand on her head the rest of the game."

The Maroon & Gold finished 1-for-2 on the power play while holding UMD to an 0-for-2 mark.

"Both goalies made some great saves, and we were able to get contributions from multiple lines on the offensive score sheet," said head coach Brad Frost after the win. "We didn't see anything [on the scoreboard] from our first line, but the other three, we did. The depth of our team is pretty special and that was on display tonight." UP NEXT
The WCHA series continues Saturday afternoon between the Gophers and Bulldogs in Duluth. Opening puck drop is set for 3:07 p.m.
