No. 3 Gophers Rally for 2-2 Tie with No. 4 Bulldogs

10/6/2018 4:13:00 PM | Women's Hockey

Minnesota scored twice in the third period to secure a 2-2 overtime in game two of this weekend's WCHA-opening series.

DULUTH, Minn. -- Seniors Nicole Schammel and Kelly Pannek scored third-period goals as the No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey team rallied for a 2-2 overtime tie with No. 4 Minnesota Duluth on the road at AMSOIL Arena on Sunday afternoon. Minnesota earned three points in the WCHA standings on the weekend after opening the series with a 5-2 win in game one.

Minnesota (3-0-1, 1-0-1-0 WCHA) went into the third period trailing by two after UMD got on the board first for the second consecutive game. After the Gophers erupted for four first-period goals in game one of the series, it took until the 6:09 mark of the third period for the Gophers to solve Bulldog netminder Maddie Rooney in game two. The Gophers forced overtime but could not find the game-winning goal; UMD then took home an extra point in the WCHA standings by winning the shootout.

"We're certainly not happy to walk away with a loss in a shootout, but overall it was a great tie especially with us coming back being down 2-to-0 going into the third period," head coach Brad Frost said. "We were a little bit out of sorts and found a way to get back in it. It was a great job by our team sticking together and finding a way to tie it up late in the game."

Minnesota Duluth (2-1-1, 0-1-1-1 WCHA) received early goals from Gabbie Hughes and Anna Klein as Hughes put the Bulldogs up 1-0 on a power-play goal with a 4-on-3 advantage just 4:32 into the game. The Gophers were down two players after being called for too many players on the ice and Olivia Knowles called for checking from behind with a game misconduct. Klein then extended the home team's lead to two with 2:51 remaining in the middle frame.

Schammel scored off a feed from Crystalyn Hengler, who picked up her first collegiate point on the play, narrowing Minnesota Duluth's lead to one with 13:51 remaining in the game. Pannek then tied the game on a power-play goal set up by Patti Marshall and Amy Potomak with 11:31 to play. UMD's Ashton Bell was called for checking from behind with a game misconduct, and the Gophers captain capitalized on the five-minute power play.

"We had a long power play and we were trying to take advantage of that obviously; with a five-minute power play, you can score as many times as you can," Pannek said. "Our power play has improved throughout the weekend on every shift, just moving the puck around, trying to take smart shots on net. I was actually trying to filter down to Sarah (Potomak) if she could get a stick on it and make something happen because I saw they were getting stretched out, so I kind-of passed to her but it hit a stick and went in."

The teams played a scoreless overtime period before a shootout to award an extra point in the WCHA league standings. Pannek and Rooney, Team USA Olympic teammates, found themselves on opposite sides of a shootout after an Olympic shootout decided the team's gold-medal win over Canada in the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Hughes and Ryleigh Houston scored for UMD in the shootout while Rooney stopped Potomak and Pannek, giving the Bulldogs the extra WCHA point.

"Certainly we wanted to win in the shootout and that didn't happen, but overall it was a great weekend with a win and a tie on the road against a real good team," Frost said.

For the game, Minnesota outshot UMD, 39-25. Rooney finished with 37 saves while Sydney Scobee made 23 for the Gophers. The Gophers went one-for-five with the skater advantage while Minnesota Duluth was two-for-four on the power play.

WCHA play continues for the Gophers next weekend as Minnesota faces St. Cloud State in a home-and-home series, traveling to St. Cloud, Minn., for a 6:07 p.m. CT puck drop on Friday, Oct. 12 before game two at Ridder Arena at 4:07 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13.

Saturday, Oct. 13 is Daddy Daughter Day at Ridder Arena. Dad and daughter duos are invited to join the Gophers for a day at the rink by purchasing the Daddy Daughter Day ticket package. All dads and daughters who purchase this ticket package will receive a Block-M t-shirt (dad) and a Gopher Women's Hockey decal sticker (daughter) for your laptop, school locker, etc. Stop by the photo booth on the concourse prior to the game and stick around for the post-game open skate, which is open to all fans. Note that skate rental will not be available, and all fans must submit a waiver before entering the ice.

Game two against St. Cloud State is also Red Wing Community Day. Red Wing community members are invited to Ridder Arena to cheer on local Gophers Nicole Schammel (Red Wing, Minn.) and Taylor Heise (Lake City, Minn.) as they take on the Huskies.
