STARTING FIVE
• The Minnesota men's basketball team opens Big Ten Conference play on the road Sunday evening with a trip to 16th-ranked Ohio State. This is the first matchup against a top-25 foe of the year for the Gophers, who are receiving votes in both polls.
• Guard Gabe Kalscheur was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Monday. Last week, Kalscheur averaged 14 points, 2.7 rebounds and one steal per game, including a career-high 25 points in the win over Santa Clara. He also made the game-winning 3-pointer in the victory over Washington to claim the tournament championship.
• Senior forward Jordan Murphy has earned some impressive accolades leading into the start of the season. The San Antonio, Texas native was a Preseason All-Big Ten Team selection as well as named to the Naismith Trophy, John Wooden Award and Lute Olson Award watch lists for top college basketball player in the nation, as well as the Karl Malone Award watch list for the top power forward in the country.
• Murphy is on the verge of three monumental accomplishments. He needs just one more rebound for the 1,000th of his career, becoming just the 14th player in Big Ten history to reach that milestone. Additionally, Murphy is tied with Jim Brewer for the school record with 51 career double-doubles. Finally, if Murphy scores eight more points and that one rebound, he will become just the 11th player in Big Ten history with 1,400+ points and 1,000+ career rebounds.
• The Gophers finished a 3-0 trip to the TCL Vancouver Showcase, earning wins over Texas A&M, Santa Clara and Washington. It marks the second straight year the Gophers have gone undefeated in an MTE event (2017 Barclays Center Classic). The Gophers added another Power-5 neutral-site win on Friday over Oklahoma State at U.S. Bank Stadium, their fourth Power Five non-conference win of the year.
