MINNEAPOLIS – Helping Minnesota to a pair of wins last week, sophomore Destiny Pitts has been named to the Big Ten's Honor Roll, the Conference announced Monday. Pitts averaged 25.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals last week as the Golden Gophers improved to 9-0 on the season.
Pitts' best performance of the week came Sunday as she scored a career-high 35 points to spark Minnesota to a 77-69 comeback win at Boston College. A native of Detroit, Mich., Pitts shot 9-of-13 from the floor, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range, and was 11-of-12 at the free throw line as she surpassed her previous career high of 28 set last season at Ohio State. The 35 points were the most by a Gopher since teammate Kenisha Bell had 35 last season at Iowa on Feb. 4.
Pitts scored 15 points in the first half Sunday and 20 in the second half. In the fourth quarter, all 11 of her points came at the free throw line, including 10-of-10 in the final 42 seconds, to help keep the Gophers ahead of the Eagles. The number of free throws made and attempted by Pitts were also career highs, while her nine made field goals matched a career high.
Her six made 3-pointers were one off a career best and continued a recent hot streak behind the line. She started the season 9-of-35 (.257) from 3-point range over the first seven games of the season, but in the last two contests she is 11-of-17 (.647) from long range.
Last Wednesday, Pitts was one of three Golden Gophers to reach double figures in a 75-39 victory over Incarnate Word. She led all scorers with 15 points, including going 5-of-9 on 3-point attempts against the Cardinals. She added four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Pitts' 12 points in the third quarter tied teammate Bell (second quarter vs. Air Force) for the most in a quarter by a Gopher this year.
Pitts' honor marks the fourth straight week that a Gopher has been named to the Big Ten's Honor Roll as Bell was recognized each of the last two weeks, while junior forward Taiye Bello received the same recognition three weeks ago.
Minnesota is back in action at home Wednesday night against Coppin State at 7 p.m. on BTN Plus.
