LAST TIME OUT - MARYLAND
In their regular season finale, the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers were able to pick up a victory over the Maryland Terripans, 26-22 to finish the Big Ten dual season at 4-5. The Gophers obtained bonus point victories from all three senior captains in the win, the first time this season the three have done so in the same dual.
"It was a tighter team score than we would have liked, but overall we had some really great performances today," head coach Brandon Eggum said after the win. "Short, Wanzek and Pfarr all got bonus points was big for us. Rylee Streifel deserved to win his match, which would have been a big upset."
20-WIN SEASONS
The Gophers have now three wrestlers this season that have increased their win total to at least 20-wins this season. Nick Wanzek was the latest to join that list at 165-pounds with his win against Maryland. Others that join Wanzek are Ethan Lizak along with Dylan Anderson. Between the 63-wins, 37 of those wins are bonus point victories.
MAJOR WANZEK
Nick Wanzek continued his insane schedule over the past and he just continues to impress. Wanzek has now nine major decisions this season, which is the most on the team. Wanzek has also yet to be defeated via a bonus point win, going 9-0 in major decisions, 1-0 in pins and 2-0 in tech falls. Over the past eight matches, the last six have been against top-11 ranked opponents.
KRONE CONTINUES TO MAKE MOVES
After two weeks at 197-pounds, the Gophers made the move to put Brandon Krone at 184-pounds against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The move payed off, giving Minnesota four team points at that weight against No. 20 Mitch Bowman, while redshirt freshman Dylan Anderson moved from 184-pounds to 197-pounds and gave No. 7 Cash Wilcke a run for his money, dropping the match 10-7.
STRONG AT 125
Overall, the Minnesota Golden Gophers have had the best record as a team at 125-pounds. Between Ethan Lizak, Skyler Petry and Steve Polakowski, Minnesota has a 34-9 record, including a 13-4 record in duals. Between the three, they have five pins, four major decisions and 11 tech falls. The Gophers also have strong overall records at 141-pounds and 165-pounds this season.
MATCHES TO WATCH - RIDER
Rider brings just one ranked wrestler according to InterMat rankings. No. 6 Chad Walsh suffered his first loss of the season just last week, and will face another tough opponent in No. 8 Nick Wanzek on Friday night. Wanzek and Walsh have not faced before on the mat. Rider does bring three other NCAA Qualifiers, and one other All-American. At 157-pounds, Jake Short will face B.J. Clagon. Although Clagon has struggled this season, holding a 10-9 record, he will surely be a tough opponent for No. 16 Jake Short. Other weights to have NCAA Qualifiers are 197 in Michale Fagg-Daves, and Tyson Dippery at 141-pounds.
STARTING GOPHER TOUGH AGAINST RUTGERS
The theme for the Gophers all night against Rutgers was starting fast. In the Gophers six wins, five of them came with the opening takedown. The Gophers 14-0 start, was also the best start to a dual this season for the Golden Gophers.
"I think the guys showed great intensity to begin matches, and it led to scoring a lot of points. There is no question that the guys who score the opening takedown often win matches," Eggum said. "We were just happy to see guys going out there and not focusing on winning, but wrestling the way we want them to wrestle for seven minutes."
THE HORIZON - BIG TEN TOURNAMENT
Minnesota will take part in the Big Ten Tournament coming up on March 3-4. The tournament will take place in East Lansing, Mich.
