Gophers Open Cardinal Invitational on Saturday

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The Gopher rowing team finally opened its 2018 spring campaign on Saturday at the Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Melton Lake.
In the morning session against Michigan, Wisconsin, and Tulsa, Minnesota claimed one second-place finish among five third-place finishes. The Varsity 8 team finished third with a time of 6:16.154, trailing first-place Michigan, who ran 6:10.294. The Gophers Varsity 4 finished third at 7:04.900, edged by Michigan's 6:56.200. The 2v8 team also finished third at 6:25.886 with Michigan again taking the top spot at 6:16.602. The Maroon & Gold 2v4 team finished third at 7:30.850 behind the Wolverines' time of 6:59.110. The Novice 8 team ran second with a time of 6:40.017 behind Virginia which finished 6:32.467.
Minnesota came back in the afternoon session with four second-place finishes in its six races against Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Clemson. The 1v4 team ran 7:29.966 behind Michigan State's 7:24.682. The Novice 8 added a second, second-place finish at 7:00.480, bested by the Spartans at 6:47.784. The 2v4 also finished second behind MSU at 7:42.897, behind a time of 7:33.113. The 2n8 ran a time of 7:02.912 behind Virginia, which finished 6:44.768. The Varsity 8 team finished third in the first race with a time of 6:26.757 behind Wisconsin's 6:20.361, while the 2v8 team finished at 6:39.028, third behind Wisconsin's 6:30.852.
The Gophers will return to the water on Sunday morning for the final session of the weekend beginning at 9:14 a.m. ET.
