Gophers Host Two Ranked Foes This Weekend

MINNEAPOLIS - The Gopher Men's Tennis team continues its stay at Baseline Tennis Center as the team welcomes No. 2 Ohio State and No. 44 Penn State to Minneapolis this weekend.
A Month Away
Minnesota (10-4, 3-0 Big Ten) concluded a string of 28 days without a home dual when it defeated Nebraska, 6-1, at Baseline last Sunday. The team was last at Baseline Tennis Center on Sunday, Feb. 25 for a 6-1 victory over Penn. The Gophers are now in a stretch of three consecutive at home, including this weekend's match-ups against Ohio State and Penn State.
Gophers in the Rankings
Minnesota remains among the top teams in the nation, ranked no. 33 in the latest ITA Division I Men's Rankings while having three individual players receive national recognition as well. Stefan Milicevic ranks no. 75 after winning his last three matches. Felix Corwin has won five straight decisions and currently ranks no. 93. Matic Spec had been previously unbeaten at the no. 2 singles position before dropping his last decision and now ranks no. 104. Corwin and Spec are currently 6-3 at the no. 1 doubles position with each of their three defeats coming against nationally ranked foes. They rank no. 78 as a pair.
Returning All-Big Ten
Minnesota returns three All-Big Ten honorees from a season ago in Spec, Corwin, and Krstanovic. Spec landed on the First Team All-Big Ten with a 21-16 overall mark and 6-6 mark against conference foes. Corwin landed on the Second Team All-Big Ten with a 23-13 mark and a 7-6 conference record. Krstanovic posted a 21-9 record in his sophomore season and earned Minnesota's Big Ten Sportsmanship award.
Scouting the Buckeyes
No. 2 Ohio State (16-2, 3-0 Big Ten) has won its last four including conference wins over Michigan State and Michigan last weekend ... Director of Tennis Ty Tucker has helmed his alma mater since 1999 ... the Buckeyes boast four ranked singles: no. 4 Mikael Torpegaard, no. 42 Kyle Seelig, no. 43 J.J. Wolf, and no. 78 John McNally ... Torpegaard is currently 8-2 at the no. 1 singles position and 12-3 on the dual season ... Wolf is 10-3 overall this spring ... Torpegaard and Martin Joyce are no. 17 as a doubles pair, while Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert ranked no. 55 ... Ohio State eliminated Minnesota from the Big Ten Tournament last season with a 4-0 win on April 28, 2017, but the Gophers own a 40-31 edge in the historical series.

No. 44 Penn State (11-7, 1-2 Big Ten) fell last time out, snapping a winning streak of three-straight ... head coach Jeff Zinn is in his sixth season leading the Nittany Lions ... junior Constant De La Bassetiere ranks no. 117 and he's posted a 9-6 record in the dual season ... sophomore Christian Lakoseljac is 10-5, including 7-4 at the no. 2 singles position ... De La Bassetiere and Lakoseljac have the majority of starts at the no. 1 doubles position but are just 5-6 on the season ... PSU is 10-6 at the no. 2 doubles spot, with Christos Antonopoulo and Alp Sentay currently 6-5 on the year ... the Nittany Lions up-ended the Gophers 5-2 last time out on April 16, 2017, but Minnesota leads the all-time series 20-6.
