CLEMSON, S.C. - The action shifted up a day to avoid inclement weather due to hit the area on Sunday, and the Gopher Rowing team began its stay in the thick of the pack at the Clemson Invitational on Lake Hartwell on Friday.
The day began with Minnesota's Novice 8 team in the 3v8 session. Rowing in a field that included three varsity teams, the Gophers finished second behind Ohio State's novice 8, 4.87 seconds behind the victor. Official times were not made available due to a malfunction in the timing system.
The Maroon & Gold competed in the second heat of the Varsity 4, and the 1v4 finished fourth with a time of 7:16.22, just eight seconds back of first place Virginia, and the ninth-best time overall across the three heats.
Minnesota competed in the second heat in the 2v8, finishing with a time of 6:35.68. Virginia claimed that heat as well with a time of 6:25.44. The main event of the evening saw the 1v8 teams in competition. Virginia once again took honors in the second heat with a time of 6:24.52. The Gophers finished with a time of 6:33.11.
Scoring for the regatta sees session winners awarded seven points, second place six points, and so on down the line. Saturday's evening session will feature finals for each event and crown a team champion following the action.
Saturday's morning session begins at 8:30 a.m. ET.
