`U' Kicks Off B1G Meet on Friday

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Minnesota men's track & field program kicked off the 2018 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Friday by sending a trio of competitors through the prelim competitions and onto Sunday's finals at Haugh Track & Field Complex.
Jonathan Webb, Derek Wiebke and Shane Streich highlighted the opening day of competition for the Maroon & Gold with Webb moving on in the 200 meters and Wiebke and Streich advancing in the 1,500 meters.
Behind a personal record in the 200 meters, Webb led his heat and finished fourth among finals qualifiers with his time of 21.18. Meanwhile, Wiebke and Streich posted the second and third fastest times in the 1,500 meter trials, respectively. Competing in the same heat, Wiebke clocked a 3:46.54 while Streich came across the line at 3:46.64. Only Wisconsin's Oliver Hoare was faster at 3:44.77. Owen Hoeft finished in 21st at 3:53.06 while Sam Carlson came in 31st at 4:02.00.
Kieran McKeag recorded a 10th-place finish in the hammer throw at 63.01 meters (206-08 ft.) - his second-best throw of the season. Jon Nerdal finished 17th at 60.42 meters (198-03 ft.) while Connor Rousemiller was 19th at 57.22 meters (187-09 ft.).
Meanwhile through five events in the decathlon, Teddy Frid sits in seventh with 3,832 points. Frid picked up 825 points in the 100 meters with a time of 11.16, 776 points in the long jump with a leap of 6.84 meters (22-05.25 ft.), 654 points in the shot put at 12.78 meters (41-11.25 ft.) and 749 points in the high jump at 1.94 meters (6-04.25 ft.). He closed out the first day of competition with 828 points in the 400 meters behind a time of 49.72. His performances in the 100 meters and the shot put were both season bests.
Additionally, Clayton Johnson finished 11th in the 400-meter hurdle prelims with a new personal record of 52.59 - moving Johnson from eighth to seventh all-time at Minnesota. Matthew Baker was 16th at 52.85.
Charlie Lawrence led the Maroon & Gold in the 10,000 meters in 19th at 31:44.04 while Connor Olson was 23rd in 31:52.84.
The Gophers continue the 2018 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday and Sunday in Bloomington.
