Gophers Finish Seventh at B1G Meet

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Jonathan Webb scored in four events on Sunday including a pair of personal records as the University of Minnesota men’s track & field program closed out the 2018 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Indiana at the Haugh Track & Field Complex.

The Gophers finished seventh in the team standings for the conference competition with 60 points, adding 35 on Sunday after tallying 25 the previous day.

Webb led the way for the Maroon & Gold on Sunday – recording personal records in the 400 meters and the 200 meters while also scoring as a member of Minnesota’s 4x400 meter relay and 4x100 meter relay. His third-place performance in the 400 meters resulted in six points and included a time of 45.88 – moving him up to fifth all-time at Minnesota. Webb also jumped into Minnesota’s top-10 in the 200 meters (fifth) on Sunday as he clocked a 20.92 to finish seventh and add another two points. Webb now sits among the top-10 all-time performers at Minnesota in eight different events between the school’s indoor and outdoor history including the Minnesota outdoor 4x100 meter relay record.

Along with Ben Psicihulis, Matt Baker and Jackson Wellenstein, Webb scored six more points in the 4x400 meter relay on Sunday as the Gophers finished third at 3:08.41. Webb’s final point came in the 4x100 meter relay when he joined Mason Roomes, Zach Nelson and Baker for an eighth-place finish at 40.60. Wellenstein closed out the day with a total of 10 points after adding a fifth-place performance in the 400 meters at 46.82.

Obsa Ali led Minnesota at the Big Ten outdoor meet with 16 points towards the team total, finishing third in the 5,000 meters on Sunday at 14:26.52 for six points. Ali won the 3,000 meter steeplechase on Saturday for 10 points.

Meanwhile, Ryan Lockard tacked on four points with his fifth-place finish in the high jump at 2.17 meters (7-01.50 ft.) while Sammie Houston added three points in the triple jump – finishing sixth at 15.45 meters (50-08.25 ft.). The Gophers notched three points in the 1,500 meters with Derek Wiebke finishing seventh at 3:52.46 and Shane Streich coming in eighth at 3:52.64.

Minnesota returns to action with the 2018 NCAA West Preliminary, May 24-26, in Sacramento, Calif.
