MINNEAPOLIS - Six Gophers have been named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District Men's & Women's Track & Field/Cross Country Teams, selected by CoSIDA, in recognition of their performances in the classroom and in competition.

Representing the Maroon & Gold are Temi Ogunrinde, Kiley Sabin, Lindsey Smits, Madeline Strandemo, Derek Wiebke and Alec Basten. All six are now eligible for Google Cloud Academic All-America honors next month.

The back-to-back Big Ten champion in the hammer throw, Ogunrinde is set to make her second career appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship after placing third in hammer throw at the NCAA West Prelim last weekend. She defended her 2017 B1G title with another individual championship this season, setting a Big Ten Championship meet record with a throw of 66.97m (219-08) in hammer. Ogunrinde also improved on her own Minnesota program record with a personal-best mark of 67.45m (221-03). The Cottage Grove, Minn., native won five hammer throw titles this season and has not finished lower than third at a meet. Along with picking up her first Academic All-District award, Ogunrinde is a USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree and Academic All-Big Ten honoree; she completed her degree in Entrepreneurial Management at Minnesota's Carlson School of Management this spring.

Sabin, a native of Slinger, Wis., is set to make her third overall and first outdoor NCAA Championship appearance. She capped the 2018 indoor season with a fifth-place showing in shot put at the NCAA Championship, earning First Team All-America accolades. Sabin then improved on her own Minnesota program record in the shot put this outdoor season with a throw of 16.89m (55-05.00) at Louisville before repeating as Big Ten runner-up in the shot put at the B1G Outdoor Championship to pick up her second-straight All-Big Ten Second Team award. This year's award marks Sabin's first Academic All-District award. A Physiology major, Sabin intends to become a physician's assistant.

Smits has received her first Academic All-District award. The Lakeville, Minn., native wrapped up her Gophers career this spring. She moved into 10th among all-time Gophers in the 400m hurdles with a career-best time of 59.89 seconds at Louisville. Smits placed 10th in the 4x400m relay and 14th in the 400m hurdles at the Big Ten Outdoor Championship. Already a USTFCCCA All-Academic honoree, Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and Academic All-Big Ten honoree, Smits graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Neuroscience this spring and plans to attend graduate school at the University of Illinois Chicago.

A native of Fargo, N.D., Strandemo is a two-time 2018 All-Big Ten First Team honoree in track & field, finishing as runner-up in the mile indoors and the 3,000 meter steeplechase outdoors after winning both events in 2017. She also earned All-Midwest Region and First Team All-Big Ten accolades during the 2017 cross country season. Strandemo holds Minnesota's program record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase; among all-time Gophers, she also ranks second in the mile, third in the indoor 3,000m, and seventh in the outdoor 1,500m. She ranks third on Minnesota's all-time top-50 six-kilometer performers list in cross country. Strandemo is a three-time NCAA Cross Country Championship competitor and a two-time NCAA Track & Field Championship qualifier. Strandemo has earned her second Academic All-District nod along with being a USTFCCCA All-Academic selection, Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, and Academic All-Big Ten honoree. A double major studying marketing and Mandarin Chinese, Strandemo graduated from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management this spring.

A native of Kasson, Minn., Wiebke closed out his collegiate career by being recognized as the 2018 Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient for Minnesota. He claimed the 2017 Big Ten indoor mile crown and later added First Team All-America accolades in the indoor distance medley relay along with two All-Big Ten selections. Minnesota's SAAC president, Wiebke was a CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team selection in 2017 and has now earned his second Academic All-District honor. A German, Scandinavian & Dutch major, Wiebke has also been named Academic All-Big Ten four times in his career and is eligible again this spring.

A native of Green Bay, Wis., Basten closed out a breakout junior campaign at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field West Preliminary last weekend where he notched his sixth personal record of the year for the Gophers in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. He also set personal records this year in the indoor 5,000 meters, the outdoor 5,000 meters and the indoor mile while also posting career bests in cross country in the eight-kilometer and the 10-kilometer. His 10-kilometer time of 29:48.6 ranks sixth all-time at Minnesota. A Kinesiology major, Basten earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in cross country this year and is eligible again this spring for track.
