Gophers Fall to Penn State in Extras, 2-1

May 4, 2018

MINNEAPOLIS - An extra-inning rally in the eighth came up short for Minnesota (34-15, 15-4 Big Ten) as Tori Dubois' solo home run gave Penn State (9-39, 5-16) the win in the series opener, 2-1. Sophomore MaKenna Partain was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate while junior Maddie Houlihan drove in the Gophers only run.

After four scoreless innings, Minnesota broke through on the scoreboard. With two-outs Partain kept the Minnesota fifth inning alive with her 11th double of the season. A walk to Lindaman one batter later set up Houlihan to do some two-out damage.  Connecting on the first pitch she saw, Houlihan sent a blooper to right field allowing enough time for Partain to break the scoreless tie.

Heading into the seventh with a 1-0 lead, Minnesota was challenged with keeping Penn State off the scoreboard. The visiting Nittany Lions did not go down easy putting runners at second and third with one away. Tying the game, Toni Polk sent a duck snort double into right scoring pinch-runner Dani Fey.

Seven innings was not enough to decide a winner in the pitcher's duel between Minnesota starter Amber Fiser and Penn State's Jessica Cummings.

In the eighth, Tori Dubois led off the inning with a solo home run to left center field to give PSU their first lead of the game.

Minnesota looked to string together a late rally as Sydney Dwyer led off the home half of the inning with a hard-shot single up the middle. A two-out walk to Allie Arneson put runners at the corners for sophomore Carlie Brandt two batters later. Brandt working the count came up just short as a swing and a miss recorded the game ending strikeout.

Suffering the loss, Fiser tossed her 24th complete game while striking out four hitters.
