Kellar Leads the Way on Opening Day at Prestwick
9/10/2018 8:00:00 PM | Women's Golf
WOODBURY, Minn. - Sophomore Grace Kellar fired a sizzling 4-under-par second round Monday to vault towards the top of the leaderboard, following a 36-hole day of golf at the Minnesota Invitational presented by Land O' Lakes, Inc. Taking advantage of ideal weather conditions at the par-72 Prestwick Golf Club, Kellar finished the day in a three-way tie for third place (73-68—141), four shots off the lead.
Kellar's 68 matches the eighth-lowest 18-hole round in program history. It is the low round of her career, besting her previous low of 71 at this course a year ago, and the lowest score carded by a Gopher since Sabrine Garrison's 67 at the 2014 Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. Her two-round total of 141 ties the sixth-lowest in program history and best since Emie Peronnin's 140 in the 2017 Big Ten Championship.
Minnesota, competing for the first time in the 2018-19 season, finished the day in 15th place (308-294—602), with every member of the Gopher lineup posting improved round-over-round scores. Senior Muyu Wu is tied for 66th (77-75—152), with sophomore Kate Lillie one shot behind in 69th (79-74—153). Close behind are sophomore Joanne Free (79-78—157) and senior Maggie Heggerston (82-77—159), who are tied for 74th and 78th, respectively.       Â
The Gophers also had four individual competitors. Leading the way was freshman Karen Zhang, who is tied for 58th in her collegiate debut (78-73—151), and sophomore Jessica Lee (76-75—151) who is also tied for 58th. Three shots back is redshirt sophomore Christine Portillo who tied for 70th (77-77—154), with freshman Alayna Eldred in 83rd place (80-82—162).
San Jose State holds the team lead by one stroke with a score of 569, with the Spartans' Natasha Andrea Oon (67-70—137) tied with North Texas's Lauren Cox (69-68—137) atop the individual leaderboard at 7-under-par.
The Minnesota Invitational concludes Tuesday with a 9:15 a.m. shotgun start. Follow along with the final round by visiting the link above.
