Gophers Wrap Up Play at Minnesota Invitational

WOODBURY, Minn. – The University of Minnesota women's golf team concluded its first tournament of the season on Tuesday, finishing 14th at the Minnesota Invitational presented by Land O' Lakes, Inc. On a windy day at Prestwick Golf Club, sophomore Grace Kellar maintained her strong play to capture a tie for third place as the top Maroon and Gold finisher.
Kellar matched her first round score to finish the tournament at 2-under par (73-68-73—214). It marked her best tournament score and finish as a Gopher.
Senior Muyu Wu tied for 55th at 12-over-par (77-75-76—228), while sophomores Kate Lillie (79-74-79—232) and Joanne Free (79-78-78—235) placed in ties for 67th and 76th, respectively. Senior Maggie Heggerston rounded out the lineup, finishing 84th (82-77-89—248).
Four Gopher individuals took part as well, highlighted by redshirt sophomore Christine Portillo finishing 63rd (77-77-76—230). Freshman Karen Zhang (78-73-80—231) and sophomore Jessica Lee (76-75-80—231) tied for 64th, while freshman Alayna Eldred was tied for 78th (80-82-74—236).
San Jose State won the team title (282-287-291—860) with the Spartans' Natasha Andrea Oon earning medalist honors (67-70-70—207).
The Gophers are back in action next week as tournament hosts, welcoming a loaded field to the Twin Cities for the ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M. The three-day tournament begins Monday, September 17 at Royal Golf Club in Lake Elmo.
