Gophers Stick Tough with Spartans in First Draw of the Season

9/20/2018 9:22:00 PM | Soccer

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Minnesota soccer battled the whole way with Michigan State Friday evening at DeMartin Stadium as the Gophers (5-4-1, 1-1-1 Big Ten) and Spartans (5-2-3, 0-1-2 Big Ten) played to a draw, 0-0. In the contest, Minnesota outshot the hosts 11-8 with April Bockin being the Gophers leading shot taker with four, three of which were on goal.

Right out of the gates Bockin took the Gophers only shot in the first half forcing an early save for the Spartan goalkeeper. The Spartans responded with a pair of corner kicks resulting in their first shot on goal, but also an easy save for goalkeeper Maddie Nielsen.

The teams continued to battle the wet field conditions as Michigan State took two more shots on goal. Minnesota also added three first half corner kicks, two of which came in the final 10 minutes of the first half.

The score remained the same after 90 minutes with both teams putting just one shot on goal in the second half. Once again right of the gates was Bockin forcing the Spartans keeper to make a save. Nielsen made her only save of the second half in the 72nd minute following a shot played off a Spartan corner kick.

In the first overtime, the Gophers took a pair of shots. One coming from the foot of Patricia Ward who just missed wide left as time expired.

It was the Minnesota back line that continued to hold tough during the second overtime, allowing Nielsen to not have to make any saves. The Spartans tried to break the Gophers down on three corner kicks, but were not successful.

The Gophers hit the road to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take on the Michigan Wolverines on Sunday, Sept. 23. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. CT.
