ICYMI: Gophers Open Weekend on the Road

This past weekend, the Gophers split up to travel to three different tournaments. Junior Stefan Milicevic competed in the Oracle ITA Masters tournament in Malibu, Calif., while Jackson Allen, Sebastian Vile, Kaleb Dobbs, and Vlad Lobak went to the Ivy Plus Invitational in Princeton, NJ. Finally, the senior squad of Justyn Levin, Josip Krstanovic, Marino Alpeza, and Jesse Sprinkel traveled to Milwaukee, Wis. for the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.

Milicevic competed in both the singles draw and the mixed doubles draw of the Oracle ITA Masters, earning a win his first match 6-3, 6-1 in the Round of 32 over Zdenas Derkas of Fresno State. Milicevic then fell 6-1, 6-4 to Daniel Cukierman of USC in the Sweet Sixteen. 

In the mixed doubles draw, Milicevic was paired with Kate Fahey of Michigan, and the two made an impressive run, advancing to the semifinals with a 6-2 win over Verdu / Livianu (Marquette / St. John's), a 6-4 win over Schretter / Jones (Baylor / North Carolina), and a 6-3 win over Oetzbach / Levashova (Pepperdine / Pepperdine). In the semifinals, Milicevic and Fahey fell to Lah / Bayerlova (Baylor / Washington State) in a closely contested 6-4 match. 
 


The Ivy Plus Invitational featured freshman Sebastian Vile's collegiate debut, and also his first win. Vile defeated Nickolas Frisk of Buffalo 7-5, 7-6(5), then won his second match 7-6(4), 6-4 against Ben Collier of Brown University. Vile went three sets with Evan Bynoe of Cornell University, but ultimately lost 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. 

"The road experience was really cool. Representing the University with my teammates and coaches supporting me was a great feeling," Vile said of his debut weekend. "It felt good to come through in a close match and get that win, which gives me a lot of confidence moving forward." 

Allen fell in the first round Eero Vasa of Vasa of Cornell, before falling 4-6, 6-2, 10-5 to Osgar O'Hoisin of the University of Wisconsin.

Lobak lost in singles 6-4, 6-2 to Davey Roberts of Princeton, before defeating LSU's Boris Kozlov 6-3, 6-3 in the consolation bracket. Lobak then lost his final match of the tournament 5-7, 6-2, 10-5 to Andrei Crapcenko of St. Johns University.

Dobbs fell in his first round matchup 6-1, 6-2 to Tom Thelwall-Jones of Tulsa, and then earned a 6-4, 6-3 win over Taine Bernhard of Oklahoma. Dobbs then lost his final match of the weekend 6-2, 7-5 to William Gleason of Nebraska.

The doubles pairing of Lobak/Allen lost 8-4 to Poling/Holden of Princeton University before falling 8-5 to Nittolo/Koay of Buffalo.  The doubles pairing of Vile/Dobbs fell 8-4 to Turchetta/Pandole of Columbia before falling 8-7(6) to Kamdem/Thelwall-Jones of Tulsa.

In Milwaukee, Jesse Sprinkel fell 6-2, 6-3 to USC before falling 5-7, 7-6, 10-8 in his second round matchup. Marino Alpeza lost his first round matchup against Alabama 4-6, 6-2, 4-6, and won in the second round 6-0, 6-2 against NC State. He then fell 6-2, 6-4 against Wisconsin.

Justyn Levin went a solid 2-2 on the weekend, losing 7-6, 6-3 against Tennessee, winning 7-5, 6-4 against BYU, then losing 6-4, 6-2 to DePaul and winning 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 to NC State.

Josip Krstanovic won his first round matchup 6-1, 6-2 against DePaul, before losing 6-4, 6-7, 4-6 in the second round . Krstanovic then lost 6-1, 6-1 to Illinois to close out the weekend. 

"I thought the weekend was a good test for our guys to see where they're at," head coach Geoff Younfg said. "It definitely gives us some direction as to what we need to work on moving forward in the next weeks. Players seem to be motivated for the upcoming Regional in Tulsa in 3 weeks."  

The Spin/Up Next

The Gophers had a solid warm-up on the road to start the season. Milicevic showed a strong start as a seasoned veteran on the team, and Vile impressed in his Minnesota debut with two wins. The team will look to build upon their strong start during the ITA Regional in Tulsa, Okla. on Oct. 18, and the Gopher Invitational at Baseline Tennis Center on Nov. 2
