Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz finished first and second overall to lead Minnesota to the team title at the Roy Griak Invitational.
Bethany Hasz won the Griak individual crown after placing 11th a year ago. She clocked a season-best 6K time of 20:47.9 with sister Megan Hasz on her heels in 20:54.3, also a season-best time. Patty O'Brien and Jaycie Thomsen earned top-20 finishes as Minnesota's third and fourth runners, respectively, as O'Brien finished 14th in 21:50.2 and Thomsen was 17th in 21:51.4. Molly Eastman rounded out the Gophers' scoring positions in 22:08.6 for 21st overall. Anastasia Korzenowski placed 24th in 22:11.4 and Zetta Mason was 26th in 22:12.7 to complete Minnesota's top seven.
The Maroon & Gold scored 52 points to run away with the team title, defeating runner-up Cal Baptist (82 points) by 30 points. South Dakota (106 points), Harvard (115 points), and Montana State (133 points) made up the top five teams in the 14-team competition.
The team title marked Minnesota's first at the Griak Invitational in 10 years as the Gophers were last victorious at the annual meet when they earned back-to-back titles in 2007 and 2008. Minnesota also won the Griak title in 2000 and 1988; this year's crown marks the fifth in program history. Meanwhile, the one-two punch of Bethany Hasz and Megan Hasz is the best individual showing for the Gophers at the Griak Invitational in program history; Bethany Hasz joins Megan Duwell (2009) and Rasa Michniovaite (1998) among Minnesota's all-time Roy Griak individual champions.
The Gophers celebrated the 2018 Griak Hall of Fame class during Saturday's competition, honoring inductees Hassan Mead, Rasa (Michniovaite) Troup, Dave Percival, and Griak Invitational co-founder Gary Wilson.
Minnesota is off from competition next weekend. When the Gophers return to action, the team will split up for three meets, the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill., on Friday, Oct. 12 followed by NCAA Pre-Nationals in Madison, Wis., and the Tori Neubauer Invitational in La Crosse, Wis., on Saturday, Oct. 13.
