FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota men's cross country program opened the 2018 campaign with a team title at the four-mile Oz Memorial on Friday evening at Les Bolstad Golf Course.
The Maroon & Gold totaled 24 points in its first competition of the season with all five scorers finishing in the top-10 including a runner-up finish by Owen Hoeft. Drake came in second as a team with 44 points followed by Minnesota State in third with 72 points and Concordia-St. Paul in fourth at 94 points.
"I thought the guys ran pretty well. It was a good night for running," Minnesota head coach Steve Plasencia said. "We have a really good group of guys in terms of cohesiveness, I'm really pleased with this group. They want to do well together, and they believe in each other. That will pay dividends as the season goes on."
Hoeft paced the Gophers in second place – matching his best career finish – and leading a trio of Gophers across the finish line behind Drake's Maximilian Fridrich, who claimed the individual title at 20:09.6. Hoeft's time of 20:18.5 narrowly edged teammate Joey Duerr in third at 20:18.6 while Jack Manderscheid finished fourth at 20:18.9.
"It was good to pack run with the guys," Hoeft said. "It's definitely a step in the right direction, and we'll get some confidence heading into the rest of the season."
Connor Olson and Alex Plasencia rounded out the team scoring for the Maroon & Gold with top-10 finishes as Olson came in sixth at 20:33.0 and Plasencia finished ninth at 20:51.9.
Additionally, four Gophers made their official debuts for Minnesota but did not factor into the team's scoring. Jordan MacIntosh finished 13th at 21:15.8 with Dawson LaRance coming in one spot back in 14th at 21:18.5. Patrick Roos was 33rd overall at 22:29.4 while Joe Morrison finished 35th at 23:29.3. Declan Dahlberg competed unattached, finishing 17th with a time of 21:26.2.
Minnesota returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 15 with Nebraska's Greeno/Dirksen Invite before the Roy Griak Invitational at Les Bolstad Golf Course on Saturday, Sept. 29.
