MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota cross country program is sending athletes to a handful of meets this week. The No. 18 Gophers women will split the squad at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday and the Tori Neubauer Invitational on Saturday while the Gopher men will race at the Pre-Nationals Invitational and the Jim Drews Invitational on Saturday.

About the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational

The Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational will be held this Friday at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis. The Women's B Race kicks off the competition at 11 a.m. CT with the Women's A Race to follow at 12:20 p.m. CT. Minnesota's top 16 athletes are set to compete.

About the Pre-National Invitational

Indiana State hosts this year's Pre-National Invitational at the LaVerne Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. Saturday's meet will feature 11 nationally ranked men's teams as the Gophers get a look at the host course for next month's NCAA championships. Minnesota is slated to run in the men's blue race at 10:35 a.m. CT. FloTrack will stream the competition.

About the Tori Neubauer Invitational and Jim Drews Invitational

The Tori Neubauer Invitational and the Jim Drews Invitational are set for Saturday morning at Ettrick Golf Club in Ettrick, Wis., hosted by UW-La Crosse. The men's 8K race is set for 11 a.m. with the women's 6K race to follow at 11:50 a.m.

Last Time Out: Paul Short Run and Joe Piane Invitational

The Gopher men placed fifth at the Paul Short Run, including a record-breaking performance by Alec Basten as he broke the University of Minnesota eight-kilometer record in his season debut to lead the Maroon & Gold at Lehigh's Paul Short Run. One of four Gophers scorers to post a personal record in the men's college gold 8K, Basten finished third in the individual race while his time 23:26.7 unseated Hassan Mead's previous school record of 23:29, set at the 2011 Big Ten championships.

The Maroon & Gold women placed ninth of 24 teams in the Women's Blue Division race at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. Led by Anastasia Korzenowski's 24th-place individual showing in a career-best 16:49.72 for 5K, the Gophers scored 265 points. Minnesota's top five runners all came in among the top 72 overall in a field of 168 finishers. Jaycie Thomsen, Abby Kohut-Jackson, Zetta Mason, and Olivia Hummel rounded out the top five for the Gophers.

Up Next: Jack's Twilight Run

The Gopher women return home to Les Bolstad Course to host Jack's Twilight Run on Friday, Oct. 25. Meanwhile, the Gopher men are off from competition until the 2019 Big Ten Conference Cross Country Championships hosted by Ohio State on Sunday, Nov. 3.
