No. 18 Minnesota raced at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday afternoon.
MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 18 University of Minnesota women's cross country team finished 16th in a stacked field at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Friday afternoon. Abby Kohut-Jackson, Jaycie Thomsen, and Anastasia Korzenowski led the way for the Maroon & Gold as the top three Gopher finishers.
The Gophers scored 474 points to place 16th of 36 teams at the meet. Kohut-Jackson led the Gophers for the first time this season, posting a career-best 6K time of 20:57.7 to finish 64th overall. Thomsen (21:06.8) and Korzenowski (21:09.8) both recorded career-best times as well, coming in 74th and 79th, respectively. Zetta Mason and Carissa Dock rounded out Minnesota's top five individuals.
National No. 1 Arkansas won the team title with 62 points, followed by No. 4 Stanford (98 points) and No. 9 North Carolina State (203 points) to round out the top three teams.
Quotable
"A month ago if you asked me if I would be pleased if we were 16th at Nuttycombe, I probably would have said that I would be thrilled," head coach Sarah Hopkins said. "Given what we did at Notre Dame, I feel like we maybe didn't quite run to that level today. I don't think we went backwards by any means. Obviously today it was a 6K on a more challenging course, so it's going to be different than a flat 5K. It's a different type of race and a different type of situation. It was solid. We beat some good teams and were in the mix with some other really good teams, but I think there were some things left out on the table that we maybe could have cleaned up a little bit and had a little bit better result."
Notable
While competing unattached, Bethany Hasz (20:39.0) and Megan Hasz (20:40.2) finished one-two and posted season-best 6K times in the 'B' race at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational. Third-place finisher Mariah Howlett from NC State was 12 seconds back in 20:52.2.
Other Action
Kayla Baker and Courtney West both posted career-best 6K times as a handful of Gophers not racing at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational raced at the Tori Neubauer Invitational on Saturday morning. Baker (23:12.3) took 26th overall while West finished 29th in 23:16.6.
